Warren Satter

AGE: 90 • Ocean Twp.

Warren Satter, 90, of Ocean Township passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Jersey Shore Hospital. He was born in 1920 in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Cranford, NJ. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the First Armored Division in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Army in the American Occupation Zone in Germany where he met his beloved wife Helen, a Holocaust survivor who had escaped from her native Czechoslovakia. They were married in 1949 in Washington, D.C. where Warren Satter worked in the Pentagon. In 1951, he transferred to Ft. Monmouth where he worked in the Engineering Laboratories in the Hexagon from where he retired in 1976. Soon after, he earned a BFA from Monmouth University where he loved being a student. A long-time resident of Long Branch for 52 years, Satter moved to Ocean Township in 2005. Warren Satter was a well known artist in the Shore area where he exhibited extensively throughout his career. His paintings and sculpture are included in numerous collections in the U.S. and internationally. He was a charter member of the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury, belonged to the Ocean County Artists Guild, the Art Alliance and the Monmouth Arts Foundation. He also loved teaching about art history, art appreciation and painting techniques which he did for over 20 years. Satter was an avid tennis player, gardener, stamp collector, and enjoyed listening to classical music and traveling with his wife.

He is predeceased by his daughter Denise and survived by his wife Helen, his daughter Michelle and her husband David Latt, his grandsons Michael and Franklin Latt and his brother Robert Satter and sisters Barbara Trubin and Joan Merle.

A Memorial Service is being planned in July to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Warren Satter's memory to classical music station WQXR, Channel 13, or Planned Parenthood. The cremation has been entrusted to the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune.

Dear Helen,
I was so sorry to hear that Warren died. I will always remember him. My Dad's tennis friend, my parents' friend, and a terrific artist. I still have all my parents' Satter paintings (one is over my fireplace) and one that is mine, a wedding gift, I think. I have always treasured them and always will. Warren will live on through his art.
Thinking of you. My Mom is well but I probably will not discuss Warren's death with her. She thinks my Dad is still alive. But she is pretty good, under the circumstances.

Love, Jean Tepper

Helen,
Please accept my condolences. I have very fond memories of meeting for breakfast in West End with Temme and having friendly, lively discussions with Warren. I know that my mother Sylvia was always very fond of you and Warren and spoke very kindly of you even in her last years.
Sincerely,
Stuart Davis
