John M. Donnelly, 88, of South Amboy died on Thursday November 24, 2016 at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in South Amboy he lived there all his life. Before retiring he was employed by Hercules, Inc., Parlin. A United States Marine Corps veteran of the Korean war he was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church, South Amboy and VFW Post 9468, Old Bridge. An Exempt Member of Progressive Fire Company, South Amboy, he was an ex-chief of the South Amboy Fire Department and was honored as one of the grand marshals of the Fire Department's 100th Anniversary Parade, as well as a grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Son of the late Joseph F. and Ellen "Nellie" Stanton Donnelly, he is also predeceased by his wife Joanne O'Leary Donnelly in 2002; his son John M. Donnelly, Jr. in 1982; his brother Joseph F. Donnelly, Sr. in 2009 and his sister Ellen Donnelly in 1995. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Thomas J. and Kathleen Donnelly of Toms River; his daughter Mary Ellen Donnelly of South Amboy; his sister Mary Lou Prusik; his grandchildren Thomas J. and Meghan P. Donnelly and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday November 29, 2016 at 9:45am from The Gundrum Service "Home For Funerals" 237 Bordentown Avenue, South Amboy followed by a 10:30am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, South Amboy. Interment will be in Christ Church Cemetery, South Amboy. Visitation will be on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.
