Kewal Shergill Obituary

On December 12th, 2017, our beloved father and grandfather, Kewal Singh Shergill, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side.

He was the patriarch and the rock of our family. He was a man led by his Sikh faith who exuded great love for all. There were no strangers in his eyes as we are all part of this human journey together. He was a brave man who faced all challenges with resiliency, strength, and endless optimism. He was the inspiration that constantly pushed us to be better human beings. He will forever be our hero. His kind, caring, and compassionate nature along with his infectious smile will be deeply missed.

Kewal was born on April 10, 1940, in Lyallpur, Pakistan, to Dalip Kaur and Chain Singh Shergill. He was the youngest of 6 children. As India gained independence and faced the tragedy of partition, Kewal and his family relocated to village Pholriwal in Punjab, India. Kewal married our beloved mother, Mohinder Kaur Shergill (Dosanjh), in 1960. They were blessed with 3 children. In 1978, Kewal and Mohinder had to make the painful decision to leave their beloved children in India and immigrate to the United States in hopes of building a brighter future for their children and future grandchildren. After coming to the United States, through sheer determination, a powerful work ethic, and an always positive outlook, they began to build a brighter future for their family. They were reunited with their beloved children in the United States on May 11, 1980.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Mohinder Kaur Shergill, his cherished children; Sharonjit (Jaswant) Nahal, Pritpal (Ravinder) Shergill, and Amandeep (Ranjit) Kandola. The apple of his eye were his beautiful grandchildren; Diljot Shergill, Manpreet Shergill, Simon Kandola, Saajan Kandola, Prabhjot Nahal, Simarjot Nahal, and Amritpal Nahal. His beloved sister, Surinder Kaur Chohan, his nephews, nieces, cousins, other family members, and friends will miss him deeply. His legacy will live on through his family.

Our father and grandfather has joined his parents, his brothers; Gurdev Singh Shergill, Tara Singh Shergill, Shigara Singh Shergill and his sister, Gurdev Kaur Atwal, in heaven.

Our family would also like to thank the UC Davis Medical Center and the UC Davis Cancer Center doctors, nurses, and staff that provided our dad with great love and care in his battle with esophageal cancer. Our family is deeply grateful to Dr. Samantha Siegel, Dr. Maha Sami, and nurse Sara Brown for their incredible love, empathy, and care not only for our father but our whole family. Thank you also to Chaplain John Harvey and Dr. Philip Summers for their kindness and care. We invite you to join us in our farewell to our beloved father and grandfather. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday December 16th, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Ullrey Memorial Chapel in Yuba City. Final prayers will follow at Sri Guru Nanak Sikh Temple at 2269 Bogue Rd., Yuba City, Ca. The story of Kewal Singh Shergill does not end here. The love and light that he brought into the world will be carried on by his children, grandchildren, and all those who were blessed to know this incredible human being and to experience a love like no other. He impacted so many lives and he will live on through them. May we all emulate to be like him.
