Mark Steinborn Obituary

Mark Steinborn

Sioux Falls - Mark John Steinborn of Sioux Falls passed away Friday, April 16 near Brookings, South Dakota. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation with family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m., Liturgical Wake Service on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, also at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The family suggests memorials be directed to Children of the Nations or a local charity of your choosing. The family is requesting all attendants wear masks.

Mark Steinborn, son of Annette (Nebben) and George Donald Steinborn, was born Feb 13, 1959 in Madison, SD. Mark grew up in Sioux Falls, attending Lincoln High School.

Mark met his wife Carolyn (Burnison) at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD, and chased her through track season. They were married in July 1983. He graduated from anesthesia school in 1985. Mark spent the majority of his nurse anesthetist career at Avera Health in Sioux Falls caring for thousands of individuals and mentoring many anesthesia students along the way. Mark most recently supported the COVID19 unit at the hospital and helped the hospital through a challenging time.

As a Jackrabbit fan through thick and thin, he had a special place in his heart for his former SDSU track and cross-country team mates.

Mark enjoyed all things outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish, and somehow found many hours in his schedule to "scout" spots with his brother, his sons, and his buddies. Mark enjoyed golf outings with his friends and also looked forward to pickleball games with Carolyn and crew.

Active in the community, he was proud to serve on the Sioux Falls park board and was a board member of the Rich Greeno Memorial. He joined over 15 medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic, providing healthcare to underserved communities and somehow found a way to translate his jokes despite not speaking Spanish.

Mark was known for going from checking in on your relatives in the hospital to being on the ready to drop in a fishing line if the conditions were right. He always took time to acknowledge those around him, although notorious for forgetting names. Mark made those around him better with his commitment to compassion, service, and family and brought humor to all situations.

Family has always been a priority for Mark, as evidence by the last year. He was grateful to spend time with his adult children, including a trip to Los Angeles to see his son Luke, a South Dakota roadtrip with his daughter Michaela, son Luke and Carolyn, countless fishing and hunting expeditions with his son Gabe, and time in California and Minneapolis with his daughter Chelsea, Carolyn, and granddaughter, Elenora.

Mark is survived by his wife Carolyn and four children, Chelsea (Evan Gustafson), Michaela Ceremuga (George), Gabe (spouse-to-be Liz Magnuson), Luke Steinborn, his granddaughter Elenora Gustafson and grandkid on the way, sister Carol Swenson (Tom), brother Craig Steinborn (Kae), sister Peggy Hanson (Mark), sisters/brothers-in-law Doreen Burnison, Diane Smith, Barbara Glanzer, Teresa Ondrak, Tim Burnison, Joe Burnison, Kevin Burnison, many nieces and nephews, and hunting and fishing buddies in every corner of the state. Mark is welcomed into heaven by his little sister Kim (Steinborn Yniguez), his mother Annette and his father Don.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. You were such a great teacher and mentor for me in anesthesia school, 1990-92. Heaven will be an even happier place with your smile and quick wit.

I didn't know Mark well, but I've known him since our SDSU days. He would always greet you with a smile. I am not surprised at all the mission work he did, he set a great example for the rest of us. My deepest sympathy to Carolyn, and his children.

Craig Kae. So sorry to hear of Mark's passing. Brad Heegel sent us an e-mail. Sorry to be out-of-touch for so long. Attended school with Craig and Kae. I knew Mark in his early years. He was always polite, fun to be around and somewhat of a prankster. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He grew up in the family tradition of healing, helping, and giving to those in need. He will be missed. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to all family, relatives, and friends. May the Lord comfort you at this time and the days / months ahead.
