Family-Placed Death Notice

WARREN, John John Roy Warren, 82, a lifelong resident of Cobb County, Georgia, died on November 17, 2010. He was born near Lost Mountain, Georgia on September 14, 1928 to the late Bertha Turner Warren and John Troy Warren. John attended McEachern High School, where he played basketball and tennis, and met and later married his high school sweetheart, Vera Jo Ballew. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1946. In 1949, he enrolled at Georgia Tech, graduating in 1953 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His entire career was spent with Southern Bell and Bell South; he retired as Network Operations Manager in 1991. During his 38-year tenure he oversaw telephone switching technology changeovers from operator assist to electromechanical, then to electronic, and then to early generations of digital switching. During his spiritual life, he devoted many years of service as deacon and elder at John Knox Presbyterian Church, and later as a member of First Presbyterian Church in Marietta. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vera Jo Ballew Warren, and three children: Beth Warren Carter of Wilmington, NC, Amye Richelle Warren of Chattanooga, TN, and John Robert Madison Warren of Roswell, GA. He had three grandchildren, Katherine and Rachel Carter of Wilmington, NC, and Andrew Cagle of Chattanooga. He is also survived by one brother, Ray Warren, of St. Louis, MO, and one sister, Margaret Warren Arnold, of Chattahoochee Hills, GA, and many nieces and nephews. John loved Georgia Tech sports, traveling, working in the yard, reading biographies and history books, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a wonderful, generous, and proud husband, father, and grandfather, and a " 'Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluvan engineer." A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Village Center of Presbyterian Village, 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA, 30106. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be given to Caring Hands Fund of Presbyterian Homes of Georgia, 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA 30106, or First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church St. NE, Marietta, GA 30060.
