John NEWTON Obituary

NEWTON, III, John October 3, 1986 May 9, 2016 John Thomas Newton, III passed away early Monday morning, May 9th, in Denver, Colorado. John was born October 3rd, 1986, in Griffin, Georgia to John Thomas and Harriet Wilson Newton. He attended St. George's Episcopal School in Milner, Georgia, where he was the first recipient of the Headmaster's Award. He graduated from Darlington School, in Rome, Georgia in 2005. In 2009, John graduated with a BA in political science from Sewanee: University of the South, where he was a member of the Phi Society of 1883. John was a member of First Baptist Church of Griffin and was also an Eagle Scout. While at Darlington, John played football and was Head Prefect of Barnes House. After graduating from Sewanee, John had the privilege of working as an Alpine Skiing Liaison with Olympic Broadcasting Services at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. He then began his sports broadcasting career with 790 The Zone Radio Station in Atlanta, first as an assistant producer, then producer, and later as an on-air personality. John was an avid sports fan, whether watching the Bulldogs between the hedges in Athens, or watching UFC with his friends. He was a talented musician, who excelled at singing and playing the guitar. John's outgoing personality and contagious smile will be missed by many. John spent the last few months of his life in the mountains of Colorado, snowboarding, exercising, kickboxing and making new friends. This time brought him tremendous health, happiness, and peace. John was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Thomas and Virginia Cheatham Newton, and Billie Zane Pitts Wilson, and his cousin Matthew Newton Bevilaqua. He is survived by his parents; his sister, Ann Trammell Newton of New York City, NY; his grandfather, Walter Scott Wilson of Newnan, GA; aunts and uncles, David Godfrey Newton of Griffin, GA, Walter Scott Wilson, Jr. (Janet) of New Orleans, LA, Victoria Newton Mooney of Atlanta, GA, Jan Newton Miller of Key Largo, FL; cousins, Emily Zane Wilson, Toliver Hart Wilson, Hamilton Cole Wilson, Virginia Mooney Jones (Ryan) and son Wyck, Franklin Kempton Mooney, Jr., and John Paul Bevilaqua (Sommerville); and his beloved DeeDee. A memorial service for John Thomas Newton, III will be held Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of Griffin with Dr. Bruce Monroe Morgan officiating. Joycelyn Planta

May 14, 2016

Dear Mr. and Mrs, Newton,
I am Joycelyn Planta, Cash's grandmother. I was in Denver with Cash, John, and Spencer April 29-May 4. Cash was so excited for me to meet John. He idolized him, and told me he was his best friend. After meeting John, I could see why Cash felt as he did. He was such a warm, wonderful young man. I was so taken with him. John spoke of his family with such love and respect. Cash and I want you to know the sorrow we feel for you all, and that our prayers are for you always. Cash is so broken and in such heartfelt grief. At this time, he is getting help. He wants so badly to talk to you when he is able. I feel so honored that I had the opportunity to meet John. If you would like to hear from Cash or myself, please contact us at any time. My number is 512-897-6904 and email is plantajoycelyn@ yahoo.com. Please know that John and you all will be in our hearts forever.

It was my great good fortune to know John and his family from the time he was crazy about WWE matches to the days he was producing and reporting on Atlanta Sports Radio. He was always good company, with a ready wit and infectious laugh. I am glad I knew him, and I grieve that he is gone.
