Cousin Detruis and I weren't really close but he really did care for his kids he always got food for them and a little extra for me and my siblings. He was the first person to take me to the Dustbowl and probably the first cousin I wanted to teach me how to draw better. Even though I was too afraid to approach him he still gave me a smile that put my mind at ease. I may not have had a lot of memories with him but I will always keep the memories I have of him close to my heart! And I pray that God will let us meet again.

Cousin Detruis and I weren't as close as I wished we could be, but I remember when he took me,my brother, and his daughter to the Dustbowl. It was my first time going because I was always looking after my baby cousins. He took us there and he said hello to all his friends, payed for snacks and he always checked up on us to see if we were doing okay. He also went to check up on Antonio and my cousin Tommy. My aunt told me about how great of an artist he was and I wanted to ask if he could give some tips but everytime he came I was too afraid to approach him, but even so he still gave me a calm smile that let me know it was alright. I cherished our short time together and will still cherish them for as long as live and I hope when I pass that God will allow us to meet again.

My cousin Detruis wasn't as close to me as I wished he was,but I really wished we could have been. One thing I will always remeber about him is that he was the first person to take me to the Dustbowl and offered to buy food for me. He even bought extra food for his children and my siblings even though we weren't hungry. I always heard that he was a great artist and I wanted to ask him when he came back if he could draw me a picture or teach me something about drawing because I wanted him to be a teacher to me. I don't really know why but for some reason I couldn't really approach him because I was too scared to get close but even so he still left me a calm smile that showed me he understood how I felt. To this day I will always remember.

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

It was just a few days I had spoken to Detrius as he had come into work. smiling and full of good converstion and always leaving everyone he came into contact a postive vibe. I will chose to remember him as the Postive strong upstanding brother who always had time to lend a hand or an ear to those he in need. I will always remember something he told me God reassignes his soilders where he needs them, and though it was to soon. I know God must have needed another soilder in his by his side. To say it was an honor to serve with you would not be enough. God speed my brother may you RIP. To the Hoolbrook family I offer my deepest condolences and prayers in this time of sorrow. My love and prayers go out to your family. The thought of not seeing Detruis at work is quite overwelming. Every time I saw him he would make me laugh. We had a joke the two of us shared. When I worked directly with Detruis I came to realize what a beautiful, warm, loving, respectful person he was. I am thankful that he allowed me into his life. I will never forget that smile. Please remember that there are a lot of people here at USP Atlanta that love him and will never forget him.

Saying goodbye to someone special in your life is never easy. The hurt in our hearts due to the loss seems to never subside, but in time it will. The memories of our loved one that we hold also so dear in our heart will replace that hurt forever. To the family, keep God first and realize the Father never makes any mistakes, for he places people in our lives for yet a little while. Cherish those moments forever and that loved one will always be with you. I pray your strength in the Lord.

The thing that I will miss most about Detruis is his sense of humor. Of all the conversations we shared, I can't think of one that didn't involve the two of us laughing out loud. My prayers go out to Ofc. Holbrook's immediate family and all other family members who are currently suffering from his sudden passing. I didn't know Ofc. Holbrook very long but what I did know of him was memorable. We spoke from time to time about the importance of family. We would stand around recalling old songs and real music. And, ever now and again, we touched basis on individual health and the stressors of work. For the most part, he was always smiling and joking. It seems like only yesterday I spoke to him at work in passing while he held down his post. I just wanted to say, "Thank you" for allowing me to know Holbrook; for the opportunity to know your son, your dad, and your husband.

My dear friend Detruis.. We never truly understand the impact that a person had on life until their not with us anymore.. Long before our careers began with the Bureau of Prisons, our paths crossed in Pemberton NJ.. It wasn't until I arrived in Atlanta that we recalled our initial meeting.. I want to thank you for your genuine concern for me and my family through the years.. You were always there to listen, give positive advice and of course make me laugh.. I, just like everyone else that had the pleasure to meet and work with you, will miss you tremendously.. It's my sincerest hope that your family finds comfort during this very difficult time..

My Cousin
People never knew just how much he meant to me and you
They knew him by name, but it's still not the same
His eyes so bright, his smile so wide
We always let him know we were right there by his side
Now he's gone from me and you
Now we have no reason to be blue
We loved him, he loved us
And we have to try not to fuss
He said goodbye and gave you a kiss
Now all we can do is reminis
Why does God take the best to love
Up to that great big world up above?
His memory will never leave
His kind and gentle smile will always be seen
Never forget him, never let him leave your mind
Tell him you love him, just one more time.
