Albert SKAGGS Obituary

SKAGGS, Albert Chadwell Albert Chadwell "Chad" Skaggs, born June 19, 1929. Chad Skaggs, soldier, journalist, teacher and outdoorsman, passed into immortality on Nov. 27, 2014, due to complications following heart surgery. Chad was born in Bessemer Alabama, to William and Annie Skaggs, and lived in numerous locations throughout his eventful and influential life. As a youth, he grew up during the Great Depression and worked many jobs, including as a printer's devil, which foreshadowed his later life. In 1946, he joined the Army, paratrooper division, where he attained the rank of lieutenant. After the military, he attended college at the University of Alabama and the University of Missouri, attaining a Masters in journalism. He worked for many years for the Associated Press, covering the big stories of a turbulent time, such as the Selma peace marches. He left reporting to become a professor of journalism, which he taught at Georgia State University, Syracuse University, Bethany College, Texas Woman's University, and SUNY Brockport. Over this time he trained many fine journalists, many of whom remained good friends throughout his life. He was an active outdoorsman, having canoed many locations across the continent, and also a well-respected birding enthusiast who had travelled to numerous national and international birding sites. He was also a musician of some renown, with a vast knowledge of folk and gospel music. A skillful raconteur, he delighted many, young and old, with his funny, poignant and instructive stories. He was a well-known voice of experience and humor among copyediting circles, especially [email protected]. Though of modest means, he was a great philanthropist, giving generously to numerous and diverse charities, including nature advocates and journalism groups. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Mark (Monica) and Christopher (Judy), as well as by two grandsons, Evan and Taylor. Skaggs-Thought of you tonight. I didn´t remember you were born in Alabama but it´s funny because I´m closing on a house in Alabama in 3 weeks. You sure are missed.

This afternoon I was wondering about Chad and discovered his passing. Chad taught Journalism (writing and reporting) at Georgia State, and I remember his makes-sense kind of teaching, his sense of humor, and his friendship. He had a 9 a.m. class and gave me permission to come in late, as I was the MARTA Traf
fic Watch reporter and my last report was at 8:59 a.m. (as I recall). I got up at 4 a.m. to leave Lake Allatoona to be at work at 6:20 a.m. By the time I got to his basement class it was difficult to stay awake (surrounded by soothing white noise and his voice). I am so glad he didn't take my nodding off personally!

I loved reading again about his life. I knew a lot of it through his various stories...which our whole family liked to listen to. I was about 40 when I changed careers and went to SUNY Brockport for Journalism. I had 4 young children and he let me bring the two youngest to classes when their school was out and gave them paper and markers to play with in his classes. When he'd come to visit us, he would bring his guitar and we'd sit outside and sing way past dark. The kids loved him too.

A great instructor, with a sense of humor and humility. Loved him and his friendship and missed him when he left Georgia State University.

Chad was my favorite journalism professor at Georgia State University and from him, I learned that truth was worth the price paid. When I was told by someone on high not to publish an investigative story, Chad told me "Do what you think is right and I'll back you." I did. he did and I learned.

Thank you for the knowledge, thank you for the courage and most of all, thank you for the support and friendship!

Rest in peace, my friend...

Even after some time has passed, losing someone so dear is still palpable and missing them will always be there.
I'm still thinking of you and the sweet man who had to leave.
Love you always,
Maggie

I was an older student of Skagg's at Brockport and he was so kind. Before leaving for college, I first had to get 4 young children on the school bus. One time I locked my keys in my car at the college. It worked out but after that I gave him an extra car key to keep in his office. When I graduated, he gave it back to me and it had a label on it that said, "Barbara's boudoir." That was Skaggs!
