Elizabeth "Lib" Ostuw, 92, of Daytona Beach, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013. She is survived by her family and loving husband of 74 years, decorated World War II veteran Irving Ostuw. Elizabeth was the daughter of Waldo Dillingham Ingle and Iva Chastain Ingle. She was born November 19, 1920 in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Elizabeth spent her childhood growing up in the mountains of North Georgia until she met her husband at her mother's boarding house in Calhoun, Georgia. They married before Irving left for his tour in WW II. Ever the adventurers, they spent most of their early years together traveling around the country while Irving completed his pilot training. While Irving was away at war, Elizabeth lived with her in-laws in Passaic, New Jersey - far from her southern roots. She later moved with her sister, Mary, to an apartment in New York City where they worked in a munitions factory for the war effort. A fond memory was when they spent VE Day together in Times Square celebrating America's victory. Irving and Lib settled in Calhoun, Georgia where they lived for 40 years. During her time in Calhoun, Lib was the consummate entertainer and a pillar of the social scene. She enjoyed hosting gatherings by the pool and playing bridge with her friends. She regularly journeyed down Highway 41 to explore Atlanta, always with a friend in tow. Lake Allatoona was always a popular destination for the couple. Lib was famously known for her ability to park her twin engine Cabin Cruiser with ease. During her free time, she enjoyed writing thoughtful notes to loved ones for special occasions or just because. She was everyone's favorite pen pal. Lib was a loving wife to Irving and caring mother to her children Janie, Joel, and Jack. Making a home for her family was at the top of her list, and her family and friends will always remember her wonderful sense of humor. You can almost still hear her spirited laugh from the top of the hill where they resided on Pisgah Way. Sundays at the Ostuw household weren't complete without Lib's famous fried chicken (a family recipe), creamed corn, potato salad and fried okra. She and Irving made a great pair- she always loved it that while she did the cooking he would do the cleaning. Weekends were spent piling the kids in the car for quick trips to Florida or going with friends to UGA games in Athens. Lib also always looked forward to her Chastain family reunions in Dial, Georgia- the old family home place. After raising their three children, they retired to Daytona Beach Shores. In Daytona, Lib's nine grandchildren always looked forward to their visits with "Nana and Granddaddy." Great memories were made loading the van up with beach toys and picnic lunches as everyone spent the day in the sand. While in Daytona, she was a member of Temple Israel and Daytona Beach Symphony Society. She also made lots of friends at their longtime Seychelles condominium. In addition to her husband Irving, Elizabeth is lovingly remembered by: her sister Mary Nolan of Monroe, Louisiana; her daughter Janie Newport of Roswell, Georgia and her children Rondi and Josh Newport and Jon Newport all of Brooklyn, New York; Joel Ostuw of Calhoun, Georgia and his children Greer and Alex Taylor of Atlanta, Georgia and Lib's great grandchild Winston; Sarah and William Ostuw of Calhoun, Georgia and Lib's great grandchild Merrill; Emily and Alon Shaya of New Orleans, Louisiana; Jack and Yvette Ostuw of Port Orange, Florida and their children Jeri of Tampa, Florida, Kayla of Orlando, Florida and Jenna and John, both of Port Orange, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Temple Israel, 1400 S. Peninsula Dr., Daytona Beach, Florida 32118 or the American Heart Association, 1500 Beville Road, Suite 606, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114. A graveside service was held at Mt. Sinai Cemetery in Daytona Beach, Florida. We love you Nana.
