I.M. SHEFFIELD Obituary

SHEFFIELD, III, I.M. Isham Malle Sheffield, III passed away Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. A native Atlantan, I.M. was born on June 23, 1931 to Margaret Ransom Sheffield and I.M. Sheffield, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Ilse Schirrmacher Sheffield, two daughters; Marion Sheffield Roehse (Jan) of Buchholz, Germany and Inga Margaret Sheffield Quazi (James) of Davis, California. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Jasper Quazi, Sophie and Justus Roehse; his sister, Margaret (Peggy) Sheffield Martin and two nephews, Thomas Everett Martin, III (Stella) and David Sheffield Martin (Elizabeth) as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his niece, Margaret (Lisa) Elise Martin Tunnell (Spencer). I.M. attended E. Rivers School and North Fulton High School before going on to Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA where he graduated with honors in 1949. I.M. was a 1953 graduate of Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA where he served as president of the student body. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity as well as ODK and various other honorary organizations. After graduating from W&L he served in the United States Navy. Following his service, he attended Harvard Business School and graduated with an MBA in 1957. I.M. returned to Atlanta where he worked for the Life Insurance Company of Georgia for many years. Active in many civic and sports organizations, I.M. was a founding member of the Atlanta Country Club as well as a founding member of the Atlanta Classic Foundation. He was a minority owner of the Atlanta Falcons from 1965 to 1979 and served on their board of directors from 1965 to 2002. As a resident of Sandy Springs, I.M. was interested in the history of the community and the preservation of "The Springs". He was active with the Heritage Sandy Springs Foundation and served two terms as President of the Board of Trustees from 1989 to 1993. I.M. was an honorary life member of the Piedmont Driving Club as well as a past member of Capital City Club, Peachtree Golf Club and Highlands Country Club in Highlands, North Carolina. I.M. and Ilse retired to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 2000. They have made many new friends and enjoyed their lives in that historic town. A memorial service for I.M. will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11:00. There will be a reception for friends and family immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Lowance Center for Human Immunology at Emory University, 245 Whitehead Biomedical Research Building, 615 Michael Street, Atlanta, Georgia, 30322.

Sheff and I met in 1978 ar West Paces ferry Hopital where he was a patient. he was a very nice man. We were very, very good friends for several years. He was devoted to his father, his sister and her family. I will miss him. Mu condolences to his family.

Ilse and Inga...I just "googled" I.M. Am so sorry that he had to leave us...He was my main mentor from the time I met him with the Arts & Heritage Society in the early 80's until y'all moved to Mexico in 2000!
