Myles SMITH

SMITH, Myles Atlanta policy leader Myles Greene Smith passed away on November 23rd, at the age of 77, from lung disease complications. A native and lifelong resident of Atlanta, Myles dedicated his professional life to the city of his birth. After graduating from Georgia Tech and serving in Vietnam as a captain in the Army, he worked as a city planner and served for many years as the Manager of Community Development at Georgia Power, working with groups like the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. He spent his career working to develop urban policy to improve the city of Atlanta and was inducted as a Fellow into the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) for his work, one of the highest honors bestowed in the field. Myles was also an avid outdoorsman and photographer, who loved camping and hiking around the world. He was dedicated to progressive causes and social justice and was a member and leader of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta (UUCA). He and his wife, Ortrude White, who passed away in July, 2018, are survived by their children Tobias Smith and Erika Gonzalez, and four grandchildren, and by his sister Cathy Hudson. A memorial service will be held at UUCA on Dec 16th, 2018 at 5pm.
