Timothy ETHRIDGE Obituary

ETHRIDGE, Timothy Samuel Sept. 4, 1961-July 5, 2017 Tim was found in his Doraville home on Wednesday morning on July 5th by his father after not answering the phone for two days. He lie face down near his bed after having suffered head trauma from an apparent seizure. He suffered from many alcoholic induced seizures in the past, but he did not survive this one. Tim started taking drugs and alcohol when he was in high school, and this had a profound influence on his ability to control himself as an adult. We tried countless times to help by admitting him to treatment centers and having him detained at the Dekalb Addiction Center, but to no avail. Eventually, we all realized there was no way to help him and he could not help himself. We watched in horror as his health declined to the point at which he could barely walk, but somehow was still witty, funny, and full of life. He was exceptionally bright, outgoing, easy to talk to, and had many friends until his addiction destroyed everything he had, including his wife Deborah who was an addict as well. Just as in Alice McDermott's story Charming Billy which was about a man who had struggled with alcoholism and ultimately died due to the disease, our whole family got involved in trying to help him, but nothing worked. If there is a young person in your life that exemplifies these characteristics, try to help them while they are young, because in these cases, it is the only hope you have in rescuing them from this hereditary disease. The Ethridge family is eternally grateful to everyone who helped him in many ways. He was preceded in death by his wife Deborah and leaves behind his parents, John and Edna Ethridge, 3 brothers James, Steven and Michael as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Crusselle-Freeman's Church for the Deaf at 2pm on 16 July 2017 at 1304 Allene Avenue SW, Atlanta, Georgia. If you wish, bring flowers from your garden to lie at the altar table, and consider making a charitable donation to an organization that helps those stricken with drug and alcohol addiction. We could not save Tim, but together we can save other lives.

I often read the obituary pages in the AJC when I read the paper every day. I am grateful to the family of Tim Ethridge for what they wrote about their family member and his untimely death. I hope your words will have meaning for those who suffer from similar problems. Perhaps your words and thoughts will give them strength to seek mental help counseling and make life changes. Thank you again for your tribute and your poignant thoughts. The words of Margaret Meade came to mind: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people can change the world: indeed it's the only thing that ever has!

May God Show His Love, Comfort and Presence to Tim's parents and brothers and family members and friends in our time of mourning and bereavement and beyond. Tim was always very friendly to me when I would walk down our street and he always remembered me.

Thank you for your courage in sharing this sad obituary. As a recovering alcoholic for 35 years, I shared the obituary at an AA meeting last night. The group was deeply moved. I know, but for the grace of God, I could have ended up just like Timothy. My heart goes out to you, the family.

May the Lord have you in the palm of His hand as you worship Him now. And may God grant you grace and forgiveness knowing how many times you tried to get help . You were My son's friend and so you were his family's friend . We will miss you...I pray you have the rest you never could obtain here on Earth.

I read Tim's obituary in the AJC. I would like to commend the family for speaking the painful truth about Tim's addiction and its cost to all concerned. I have been sober for years and have seen many addicts and alcoholics die from the effects of drugs and alcohol. But most of their obituaries gloss over the true cause of their deaths. I believe that being honest about the costs of addiction will help others who may be struggling. So thanks again to the Ethridge family for their courage!

A powerful message that you all as Tim's family are strong and brave to post. May this obituary allow others struggling with addiction to accept the help they desperately need. God Bless You for loving TIM and supporting him. May you find peace and comfort knowing he is no longer struggling.

tim was one of the first friends I made at cross keys in the 8th grade . he was funny ,liked by all and always seemed to be up beat .I lost touch with tim after highschool and reconnected 20 years later at our 20th reunion .by this time , tim was deep into his addiction . it saddened me to see him in this condition .my prayers go out to the etheridge family ,i hope that you find some peace during this difficult time . i will always remember the younger tim from high school but will feel saddened about losing another classmate and friend that fills many memories of my teenage years . god bless tim and all that suffer from the same addictions .until i see you again my friend .

I stopped short when I saw the picture of Timothy, it reminded me of my brother. The details of his life lost to addiction also reminded me of my brother. God bless you for your courage in telling the truth of your loss of a life and the promise that might have been.
I wish you peace.
