Family-Placed Death Notice

HAROLD GOURGUES Harold Gourgues passed away Thursday, August 18th, 2005, after a valiant, inspirational battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be remembered as a visionary, a leader, a humanitarian, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful friend. Harold was born September 23, 1937 In Larose, Louisiana, son of Harold and Clara Belle Gourgues. He grew up in Louisiana, graduating from Louisiana State University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical engineering. He demonstrated his strong leadership abilities as President of the LSU student body in 1959 and as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Harold also received a degree in meteorology from Penn State University and used those skills serving his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1963. He was stationed in England and forecast the weather for Air Force pilots based there. After leaving the Air Force, Harold married the love or his life, Geneva. In their 39 years of marriage they raised 2 children, Katherine and Walter, and experienced the joy of 4 grandchildren. In 1975 Harold and Geneva moved from New Orleans to Atlanta where Harold founded and managed the Financial Planning Division of the Robinson-Humphrey Company, Inc. His intellect, leadership, and innovative thinking quickly established Harold as one of the leading financia1 planning authorities in the nation. He authored 3 books on personal finance and was frequently quoted by The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, USA Today, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other leading financial publications. Money Magazine named Harold one of the 7 leading financial planners in America, and Kiplinger's Personal Finance labeled him "the financial planning industry's most widely respected critic." Georgia Trend Magazine featured Harold in 2 major articles, including one entitled "The High Priest of Finance". Harold's role of "priest" went far beyond the secular world. Harold was a good and faithful servant to his Lord and Savior, dedicating himself and his talents to various ministries of the Roman Catholic Church of North Georgia. In 1988 Harold and Geneva founded the Marian Meadows Retreat House for archdiocesan teens and supervised it for 15 years. Marian Meadows continues as a spiritual retreat house. Harold also served as Spiritual Director of Christ Renews His Parish for 7 years at both Our Lady of The Assumption Parish in Atlanta and Good Shepherd Parish in Cumming. In 1990 Harold was ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Archdiocese and served at Our Lady of The Assumption, Good Shepherd Parish, and the Cathedral of Christ the King, before returning to his home parish, OLA. In 1997 Harold received his Masters Degree from Loyola University in theological studies with a major in Adult Religious Education. In 2004 he completed his studies leading to a graduate level certification in Spiritual Direction from Spring Hill College. Harold, with Geneva by his side, was a founding member and President of the Georgia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and for the past 3 decades devoted his energies and resources toward the effort to find a cure for diabetes. Harold is survived by his wife, Geneva Jones Gourgues; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine Gourgues Williams and Dane Williams and their children, Sierra and Jonah of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, H. Walter Gourgues III and Lauren Snyder Gourgues and their children, Gabrielle and Hunter of Atlanta; mother, Clara Belle Gourgues and sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and Charles Shaver of Thibodeax, Louisiana; brother Buddy Gourgues of Decatur. I met Harold in college, while dating his daughter Katherine, in my early 20s (I´m 50 now), and he impressed me greatly with his wisdom and knowledge. I am sorry to hear of his passing; the world is a lesser place now that he is gone.

Harold was a very caring individual. He was an inspiration to anyone who knew him. He was a visionary leader in the financial service field where I first met him in Atlanta. I last saw him walking the Beach in front of Piper Dunes earlier this year at Amelia Island. My prayers are with the family. I know Harold will rest in peace.

I was one of Harold's LSU SAE brothers. His life at LSU was always an inspiration to his brothers and now I know what a blessing he has been to so many after those years long ago. Our prayers are now with his family.

Dear Geneva and family,

I want you to know what an inspiration Harold was to me in my career as a financial advisor. He led the way with such charm and enthusiasm. I also recall how he always used your name in his talks, so we know how much you were part of his team. I appreciate your sharing Harold with all of us.

Geneva,

When Harold came to the Cathedral of Christ the King not so long ago I was deeply touched by his homilies. his very presence. Whenever he served at Liturgy we were all deeply touched and blessed. He had a gift that is so extraordinary. He could take the WORD, open it up and make it so relative to this day, this time in history. I know he must have taken great pains to prepare his homilies, but they sounded like they were straight from his heart and truely the Spirit spoke through him. I was very sad when he left the Cathedral.

May God grant you the graces you will need and may the Lady cover you with the mantle of Her love and strengthen you in the difficult days ahead.

I was saddened to hear of Harold's death and wanted you all to know you are in our thoughts and prayers. I only met Harold once in person but enjoyed many long conversations by phone and as a long time subscriber to his newsletter. I was sad to see it end but know he wanted to spend his time with our Lord's work. My life and those of my clients were enriched in many ways by Harold's wisdom and study. He will be missed by many.

Dear Geneva,

Words cannot express the sorrow we feel at the loss of your husband, Harold. We have built a bond with you both since our first meeting in October last year to discuss Marian Meadows. Harold especially, was adamant with who he would sell the property to. I know it was God's plan that Janice & I have the honor to continue the legacy Harold began with you at Marian Meadows in 1989. Harold was a visionary and committed Marian Meadows to the glory of God so everyone, youth and adults, would have a place where they can find peace and renew their own spirituality. Harold truly was a man doing God's Will while on this earth. He has touched so many people from his generosity and love for humanity. Harold will live on in my heart as an inspiration, a mentor, a God lead man and friend. I will forever miss him.

Love and Peace,

Geneva and Family, In addition to his many impressive accomplishments in the secular world, Harold was a wonderful man of God, one of the very few in the Archdiocese of Atlanta who had the courage to speak out against corruption in the local Church, including the abuse of and by local clergy. May our loving Savior warmly welcome him to his corruption-free, heavenly home.

With sympathy and prayers for Harold's family. Harold was rock solid when it came to high standards and ethical practice. He set the bar high for legions of planners who followed. He also knew that real success was in the spiritual realm, when on that glorious day, God said, "Well done, Harold, my good and faithful servant. Come on in!" He will be missed but fondly remembered.

Dear Geneva, Katherine and Walter,

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time, but I can't help but smile when I look at the picture of Harold in the paper. He truly loved life, his family, his friends and God. I am eternally thankful for the joy and support you and Harold gave my parents as you reconnected the past couple of years. Gene and Harryette relished the time you all spent together and Dad was kind enough to share Harold's emails during his fight. They offered inspiration and hope while he fought his greatest battle.

I'll always have fond memories of Thanksgiving at the lake and Harold giving the "thumbs up" to my version of GoGo's gumbo. That was the ultimate compliment for a true Cajun to approve of a North Louisiana "yankee's" cooking!

My heart and prayers go out to all of you as you celebrate his life. Lord knows everyone in Heaven better get ready for Harold's arrival because "they ain't seen nothing yet!" He was one of a kind.

We are very sorry for your loss and glad to know Harold is at peace. Although it had been many years since we had seen Harold, we had kept up with inspiring battle through friends. He truly was one of the nicest, most genuine and generous people you could ever meet. He truly made an impact on us and I'm certain countless others.

All our best to the family,

I, too, am saddened by Harold's death at the prime of his retirement life. I entered the financial planning profession in 1982 and Harold's book, Total Financial Planning" became a bible of industry truisms for me when it was published. He was a great leader in the industry and a dedicated disciple to his personal beliefs.

He will be missed.

Geneva,

I am so sorry to hear of Harold's illness and his passing. We don't appredciate at the time early in our career, how impactful relationships may be. As I look back, there is no one who had the courage of his convictions to do the right thing like Harold Gourgues. He is solely missed.
