Eddie KING Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

KING, Eddie Atlanta Artist "Bottle Art Eddie" Eddie King, 81, passed on Monday, February 4, 2013 at his home in Atlanta. Eddie, better known at 'Bottle Art Eddie', immersed himself in a colorful world filled with whimsical images, and vibrant acrylic swirls. Dressed in multi-colored frames, and sneakers, he was a beloved Atlanta celebrity. It was impossible to meet him and not forever be touched by his stories, charm, and warmth. From a bleak past, unimaginable to most of us, to the colorful world that he created, his journey was unparalleled. Eddie lived in a Jewish ghetto outside of Warsaw, Poland at the start of WWII. Much of his childhood was spent trying to outrun the Nazi's and escape eminent death. After witnessing unspeakable atrocities, luck and good connections brought Eddie to New York City in 1941. At the age of ten he was selling nylons, newspapers, Bibles, and earrings --- as a way of supporting his mother and younger brother. Unsurprisingly, he became a successful salesman respected by all, and loved by many, After retiring at the age of 70, Eddie found a passion for turning plain recycled bottles into true works of art. Each bottle, painted only with his fingers, tells a story of mystery, love, adventure, and everything in between. For Eddie, the bottles were a way to live out the childhood he never had. As Eddie and the bottles grew in popularity, he was able to sell hundreds of bottles each festival weekend. People weren't just buying the art bottles, they were enjoying having the opportunity to stand and chat with a vibrant, inspiring, and wise man with so much history to share. Eddie was a mentor to many in the arts community. He shared his life story and experiences to help others. He overcame immense obstacles and still lived life with a colorful and eclectic zeal. Eddie touched the lives of countless people, and will continue to do so through his art and the impressions he left in the hearts of all who knew him. Eddie is survived by his wife of 30 years, Adria Davenport; his three daughters, Paula King and Joy King, both of Syracuse, N.Y. Amy Hiott of Raleigh, N.C.; his son, Jeff King of Los Angeles, Ca.; a brother, Jerry Kozierow of Boca Raton, Fla.; a stepson, Travis Davenport of Atlanta, Ga., eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 12th at Southcare Cremation in Alpharetta, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Jewish National Fund for Israel, NYC, N.Y. and the Muscular Dystrophy Association of America.

My daughter loved the beautiful bottles created by a beautiful person. She looked forward to seeing him at the local festivals and sharing conversation and love of art. It touched my heart to see the interaction and time he took with all of the lives he touched. I was honored to be able to visit one of his last festivals with my daughter. It was a day that I will always cherish in my memory.

I met Eddie some years ago very much by happenstance at the Candler Park Festival and from that day forward I would not miss the chance to say hi and share a laugh with this very genuine man. His smile, his vigor and zest for life will live on through his art. I am so very thankful that so many of my friends and family have a oiece. For everytime I see one I will always remember the remarkable Eddie King. RIP my friend.

You will forever be remembered as one of my most exceptional experiences, Eddie, and my most favorite festival artist to write about. Your art fills my heart and my home with happy memories. I shared it with everyone close to me. You were much like my sister who was also an artist and in heaven now. Both of you made ordinary things beautiful and cheerful. I know you two will meet there and be great friends. God bless you Eddie and thanks for putting a smile on my face!

I was looking through my mother's old pictures and found some of Eddie's early genius with pictures. He would place thought bubbles on pictures of family and friends with funny quotes and comments. Then, the collages. We have big manila envelopes filled with clippings of photocopied family pictures where he had made one of his beautiful, and usually large, collages depicting the fun and happiness of whatever event or person was being celebrated. An anniversary, birthday, or just a general good time, he knew how to bring the pictures together onto one board. The picture windows are always so amazing. You can take 4 square walls in an inner room, placee one of his picture windows on the wall and you have a new and exciting view of memories. And the bottles. Some with pictures, others with just the colorful smear of his fingertips framing a unique colorful vision on glass. I'm going to miss him so much.

We will truly miss seeing "Bottle Eddie" at the many Arts Festivals we attend. He always remembered our names and was such a wonderful, witty character! He really seemed to enjoy meeting people and always had something nice to say. We have many of his bottles and we will treasure them now that he is gone. We feel so blessed to have known him. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.

Eddie will truly be missed. He was a joy to talk to, and whatever your mood, he would soon have you laughing. He loved his wife dearly and would come to my booth several times during the day to pick out that "perfect" dichroic pendant for her and trade for his great bottles. Rest in peace Eddie. A true friend, an inspiration and a honor to know. I will miss Eddie's physical presence but I will never forget him. He left a positive impact on me no matter how often we spoke and he was a major inspiration during some earlier rough times in the art business.

I will miss Eddie's "merengue" requests. When ever he attended any event where i was playing or singing with a band, he asked me to play a "merengue" that he will then dance with Adria. A few years ago he brought me a beautiful piece of his art that he had made for me with a gutarrist picture on it and that I see every day as I walk in my livingroom. Thanks for having touched our lives Eddie. This Friday I'll play a few "merengues" for you. May God bless you and your family.
