Marian HICKS Obituary

(Continued from previous column) That unwavering commitment to whatever she undertook was captured by an event that occurred some thirty-five years later as Marian ended her career. It was the tradition at Freeman's Mill that a retiring principal would walk throughout the school at the end of that last day of class before the summer break and teachers, staff, PTA members, and students would hold up signs with farewell messages and accolades. There were many signs and many well wishes that lined those halls that day, but one sign was particularly powerful. It was being held by fourth grade teacher Mark Collins. It simply read "Faithful". No word is more fitting to describe her forty-two years as an educator than that one. Marian was the consummate professional with an unrelenting focus on being an effective administrator and curriculum leader. At the same time she was an unapologetic people person who had a genuine affection for colleagues, faculties and staffs, parents and students. Most importantly, she made a difference for the children and communities she served. Marian was a devout Christian throughout her life and was a member of Saint Barnabas Anglican Church in Dunwoody. She is survived by her husband of forty-two years, her son Charles Wilton Hicks, III, and his wife Jennifer, two adored grandsons, Charles Wilton Hicks, IV, and Nathan Howard Hicks, her mother, a brother Charles A. Roberts and his wife Mona, sisters Cathy Roberts Alred and her husband Thomas, Linda Roberts Alred and her husband Michael, and Judith Hicks Stephenson and her husband Larry, and several nieces and nephews. The family expresses its deepest appreciation to the physicians and staffs of the Mayo Clinic, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Northeast Georgia Diagnostic Clinic, and the Winship Cancer Institute and Emory Johns Creek Hospital, for their efforts on behalf of our beloved wife and mother. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at H. M. Patterson & Son - Spring Hill from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Saint Barnabas Anglican Church, 4795 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338. The Right Rev. Chandler Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to Saint Barnabas Anglican Church, 4795 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338 or another charity of choice. Marian's presence and influence is still felt at Camp Creek Elementary School. I make it a point to look at her beautiful picture when I go to school as a grandparent now. She was an outstanding Principal, and an absolutely wonderful person. Her southern charm was evident all the time! I loved when something shocked or surprised her and she would calmly say, "Well, my word!" I worked with Marian when she first came to Camp Creek and I was PTA President. I had a teaching degree and Marian recruited me to sub, then encouraged (actually insisted!) that I do long term subbing, as well as a one year teaching position for music with Special Needs children who were in transition. She was always supportive of her teachers, staff, and her students. She went above and beyond with everything she did. We share an April birthday, so I always remember her every April. I think of Charles and "Young"Charles and his family and hope they are doing well. A star is shining brightly in the sky with Marian's name on it! You are missed, my dear friend, but you will never be forgotten.

I cannot begin to describe how much Marian influenced me as a beginning teacher. My first year teaching was at Centerville Elementary School , where I taught 4th grade. Marian set the bar so high as an administrator, that I compared everyone that I ever worked for later in my career to her. Marian was extraordinary. I miss knowing that she has left us in this life. My joy is knowing that she has gone to a great reward with Christ

Marion was a great principal and a dear friend. She was always a wise counselor and so helpful with the special needs children that I worked with. It was a joy to get to know her as we opened Shiloh Elementary together. She will be missed greatly, but remembered as someone who walked her out her faith in Jesus with joy and great love.
Our prayers and love go out to family and friends at this time. Blessings and comfort from the Holy Spirit,

Marian Hicks touched my life, and the lives of so many, in precious ways. Growing up in Lithonia, Ga., Mrs. Hicks was my choir leader when I was five years old at Lithonia First Baptist. I remember her beautiful voice and how she guided rambunctious children to sing God's praises....many years later, Marian was gracious enough to hire me as a Special Education Teacher at Freeman's Mill; the two of us had come full circle. I am comforted in the fact that I told her how grateful I was to have known her both as a child and as an adult, and for her unwavering support of children and educators. I loved her sense of humor, and how she was always willing to do fun things to inspire children or to entertain her staff at the end of year luncheons. My heart is so heavy, but I am forever grateful for the life of Marian Hicks and how she blessed me in so many ways. My prayers continue for Mr. Charles and all of the family. In the famous words of Marian Hicks, "Are we proud, or what"? I will forever be proud to have known her, worked with her, and loved her.

It is said that when we lose a loved one here on earth, we gain an angel in heaven that watches over us. I pray that you take comfort in knowing that you have a very special angel to watch over you. May God give you the comfort and peace that you seek and may the soul Marian rest in peace.
Mathew 5:4 Blessed are those that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
I extend my most sincere condolences to the Hick's family.

Marian Hicks was an amazing educator! She and Judith Ford taught me much about what it meant to be a good Administrator. Their guidance and modeling have made a lasting impression on my career and indeed as a person. Thank you Marian for your leadership, guidance, passion and commitment to the children you served. Your contributions to the lives of many kids and educators is incredible. We are better people and professionals because of you!

Our family was moved to the 'new' Shiloh Elementary with some trepidation the year it opened and Marian greeted us with all the warmth and welcome we could possibly want. She made our years there wonderful. ¢¾ Later when we moved to a larger home and were redistricted again 1 year after being there. We found out we were going to Camp Creek and guess who the new principal of that school was going to be? Marian Hicks. I was beyond thrilled and reassured our friends and neighbors that getting moved to this school was going to be THE BEST thing that ever happened to them because this principal was the best ever. She was. She remembered me and my 5 children. I loved Marian. I know I speak for many when I say that it felt like she always gave my children the best teachers, but I know it's because she made sure the school had the best teachers in the first place. Oh Marian, you will be so very missed by every person you came in contact with. May God Bless You and your Loved Ones always....¢¾

Marian Hicks interviewed me for a teaching position at Bethesda Elementary School in 1985. She was going to be the assistant principal there . She was caring and loving and put me at ease immediately. I had recently moved to Ga. from Ca. I had recently become a young widow with 3 children and had been a stay at home mom. She embraced me and I felt completely accepted and felt her kind spirit and love. I am deeply saddened to learn of her leaving our earth. She is with our heavenly father in peace. My deepest sympathies to her family, she was one of those special caring people who radiated love and compassion to all.

Words cannot begin to describe the void in my heart upon hearing that Marian Hicks passed away. I worked with Marian at Camp Creek as her first PTA President. Marian also hired me to teach music to Special Education students for a year, then got me involved in long term subbing at Camp Creek. I also worked closely with Marian as her LSAC chair. Not only was she an outstanding administrator, but she was also a wonderful person. She loved her family, her students, her staff, and supported everyone. Marian was a true people person. The world has lost a very special lady. I know Marian Hicks will live in our hearts forever. She touched the lives of so many people. My sympathy to Charles and his wonderful family. My family and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. A bright new star will be shining down upon us now. I will miss you, my friend.

I'm saddened at the thought of Marian's passing. Due to my husband's job move, I was only at Daves Creek the first year it opened. I can still see Marian's infectious smile as she bounded down the hallways. She was still the same at our 10 year Daves Creek anniversary. In my 40 years as an educator, I found very few administrators could emulate her style. The obituary is a true tribute to one who will ever hold a special place in my heart.

What an amazing legacy! My favorite memory was when Ms. Hicks was new to Camp Creek and said to me as I sat crying in her office because my son was being moved to another classroom when he was finally doing so well, and had been shifted so many times. "I don't know you, and I don't know your son, but I believe based on what you have shared, that YOU know your son, and therefore I will make sure that he stays where you believe he will succeed. Forever grateful. She was a blessing to SO many students and their families.

Marian was my principal when I was a student at Camp Creek as a child, and became my boss when she hired me to teach at Camp Creek as my first teaching job out of college. She made me feel so special when she hired me...giving me a chance as a first year teacher in a wonderful school filled with well-seasoned and experienced educators. What a beautiful, graceful, strong and loving woman and leader. She was such an amazing principal. I can still picture her walking down the halls of Camp creek while exuding such confidence, poise, and leadership. My heart is broken today as I think of how such a beautiful soul has left this earth, but I know she is with our Savior and Lord. I spent part of the day in my kids' elementary school today where I had a chance to teach an art project and I thought of Marian while I was there. Much love, prayers, sympathy and peace to her family.

Marion Hicks was the principal of Centerville and Shiloh Elementary schools when my daughter, Allison, attended them. I always loved and admired her dedication to making each of those schools the absolute best environment they could be for our children. I especially appreciated how important she made my daughter's class feel when they were moved to Shiloh from Centerville as 5th graders. She created a fun, interesting, and caring school for them from day one and eased the transition from the school where most of them had spent all of their elementary school experience. Rest In Peace Marion knowing you made a huge difference in the lives of the many, many students who were fortunate enough to come under your care and guidance.

I will always remember the day I met Marion Hicks. She interviewed me for a teaching job at Camp Creek ES. She liked the fact that I went to Vanderbilt and that I was a Christian. By the end of the interview I found us both sharing our testimonies as to how we came to know Jesus. Then she asked if she could give me a hug. I had never in my life experience that and am so grateful to have worked with such a gifted leader and more importantly a wonderful sister in Christ. I love you Mrs. Hicks and will miss you terribly. But I know that you are in Heaven singing beautifully and playing that piano with a new body and a joyful smile in your heart. Thank you for being faithful and for sharing your gifts, talents, and friendship with us all. Rest in peace and may God bless you.
