Joy BRUCE Obituary

BRUCE, Dr. Joy Dr. Joy Bruce, age 43, died on April 25, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia of brain cancer. Joy is survived by her parents, Jim and Sue Bruce and her sister, Heather Grande, all of Richmond, Virginia; and her wife, Dr. Brenna Segal, of Atlanta. Joy graduated with a B.A. from UVA in 1993, from North Georgia College in 2000 with an M.S. in Physical Therapy and from VCU in 2011 with a PhD in Health Sciences. She worked at Shepherd Center for nearly a decade as a physical therapist and later as a research scientist at their Spinal Cord Injury Research Lab. Joy was a compassionate professional, who loved the challenges of her difficult, but rewarding work. Her ambitious nature and passion for helping others touched the lives of patients, peers and students alike. She enjoyed the outdoors, cycling and hiking, and doting over her large family of four-legged pets. Her wife, family and friends will remember her as a loving, giving and selfless person with an uplifting spirit and a contagious sense of humor. A memorial service is scheduled for 12:15 on April 28, 2015 at Shepherd's auditorium. Donations may be sent to American Brain Tumor Association, Furkids, Shepherd Center or Weinstein Hospice.

Joy was one of my classmates in her PhD program at Virginia Commonwealth University. I remember how intelligent she was and such a sweet and caring person. It is hard to believe that it has been 5 years and she is truly missed. One that was gone too soon. My prayers are with her family and friends.

Dearest Sue and Jim,

In, once again, trying to find you, having lost that note with all of your information from our wonderful visit, we just learned of your tremendous loss last April. Lynn happened to Google Joy's name and found, to our devastation, Joy's Obituary!

We are sickened that we let you down as caring friends, that we were not there for you!! We are sooooo sorry and soooo sad for you!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

I know that you are very proud of Joy and her academic and career achievements as well as the lovely young lady that she grew to be.

Please share our love and sympathies with Heather, Brenna, Barb, and Phyllis.

Once again, we so wish we could have been aware and closer to you to share your grief.

Because we have no contact information for you, other than this, we hope you will contact us so that we can reconnect and continue our friendship.

We LOVE you guys.

Once again, our love and very, very deepest sympathies!!

I was a student of Dr. Bruce's between 2005 and 2008. She had a true gift for teaching that not all in that line of work are given. I was always so thankful to have her as teacher, but always felt guilty about having taken her away from the patients at the Shepherd Center, knowing what an asset she was to them. She was such a light in this dark world in so many ways (loving, kind, compassionate, friendly, smart) and will be dearly, dearly missed.

Joy was a skilled and compassionate, physical therapist, who helped me recover physically and spiritually at Shepherd back in 2010. My deepest condolences. So sorry to hear about the passing of such a wonderful person.

As friends of Heather's and Jason's, our family is saddened by the news of Joy's passing. Our thoughts and prayers have been on Joy as she fought so bravely. Heather spoke of Joy's love of life and she will be truly missed by those who knew her. Our thoughts and prayers go to Joy's family and friends as she passes from this life.
