James Adams Obituary

ADAMS, Sr., James A. James Arthur Adams, aged 92, succumbed to a valiant struggle with Alzheimer's, a stroke and stomach cancer on December 23rd, 2015. Born on October 14th, 1923, during the depth of the Great Depression, he was the youngest of six children born to Nelson and Rosa Adams in his beloved French Camp in rural Mississippi on the Natchez Trace. He is survived by his loving wife, Weeta Lang Adams, and their only child James A. Adams, Jr. He is also survived by his greatest legacies, Mason Connor Adams and Carolina Lee Adams of Atlanta, as well as several nieces, nephews, a brother-in-law, Robert Lang, and a sister-in-law, Kay Adams. He was preceded in death by his adored daughter-in-law, Laurie Felvey Adams. He was one of that "Greatest Generation" of American patriots that went off to war in the 1940's to defeat our enemies and defend our cherished freedoms. He returned home to a quiet and simple life of hard work, worship to God and humble service to others. He was a man of few words and no pretense, yet he collected many loyal friends throughout his life who shared those values. In 1954, during a far different era when PC described a Plain Chocolate, and there were only three television networks, Arthur could often be found courting Weeta in the Channel 2 Room on Sunday nights at the Varsity Drive-In on North Avenue. In 1955, he convinced her to be his bride. This remarkably strong marriage flourished for sixty years. Only until recently, he still enjoyed sitting at her side and tenderly holding her hand. For over a half-century he and Weeta lived in Vinings, Georgia and worshipped faithfully at Northside United Methodist Church for 54 years. He had a great intellectual curiosity for all things mechanical and electrical, and an abiding fascination with Mother Nature. He spent his career as a dedicated employee of AT&T and Southern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1982. His retirement focused on volunteer activities through the Telephone Pioneers of America, Meals on Wheels, and Recordings for the Blind. Yet his primary passion in later years was enjoying the love, nurturing and happy times with Carolina and Mason. A memorial service will be held January 8, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Northside United Methodist Church Chapel, officiated by his much respected friend and pastor of 22 years, the Reverend Dr. Gil Watson. With his frugal Scottish heritage and good sense of humor, he would be pleased that his funeral arrangements cost $1,565.00 There will be a private family consecration of his ashes at a later date. His family is thankful for the remarkable care from his professional caregivers Gigi Manuel, Rochelle Selby, Mary Callahan and Barbara Savage. May God bless his sweet soul. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that online gifts be made to The Smile Train.

Mr. Adams was an intelligent, caring, sweet person, and I am grateful to haven known him and been apart of his life. I learned a lot from him and will forever cherish our time together, full of fond memories and great laughs. Although I was the one around to care for him, he always wanted to make sure I was OK, like a true gentleman. From the moment we met until his passing he always remainded sweet and thoughtful. He will be forever missed and loved.

Arthur was a polished Southern gentleman and a man of integrity. I was privileged to be his sister-in-law and will forever remember him with a fondness. He was very respectful of others and only spoke his opinion when it made sense to do so. My heart is heavy for the family at this time of sorrow. May God forever hold the family in His loving care and grant peace.
