Floyd Guy McCormick Jr.

Scottsdale - Floyd Guy McCormick, Jr, 91, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2018 with his family by his side. Floyd was born July 3, 1927 in Center, Colorado to Floyd and Gladys (Weir) McCormick. He graduated from Center High School and entered the US Navy, serving on the USS Texas, 1945-46, as a Fireman. He earned a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and Mechanical Arts from Colorado State College (now Colorado State University) in 1950, then taught Agriculture in Fairplay and Berthoud, Colorado, before returning to earn his Master's degree in Agriculture Education from Colorado State in 1959. Moving on to Ohio in 1960 to pursue his doctorate, he completed his PhD in Agriculture Education at the Ohio State University in 1964. While at OSU he met and married his wife, Connie, and began a family. After serving as an Associate Professor at Ohio State he accepted the position of Department Head and Professor at the University of Arizona in 1967, moving the family to Tucson. He held that position for 23 years, retiring in 1990. During his distinguished career Floyd served in leadership positions of professional organizations including President of the American Association of Educators in Agriculture (AATEA) in 1977, and Vice President of the American Vocational Association (AVA) from 1985-88. He received an outstanding service award for the latter, which recognized that he "developed extensive core and specialized curriculum materials which have been widely adopted in Arizona schools and used as models regionally and nationally." In retirement Floyd and Connie traveled extensively, while living in Arizona and their summer home near Creede, Colorado. He enjoyed trout fishing, collecting native American art and spending time with seven grandchildren. Floyd is survived by wife Connie, children Angela of Eugene, OR, Craig (Edna) of Las Vegas, NV, Kim (Patrick), of Scottsdale, Robert (Jennee) of Scottsdale, and brother Robert (Cornelia) of Corrales, NM. Family will hold a private remembrance.
