Ruben Reyes Obituary

Ruben R. Reyes, 62, of Tucson died suddenly on March 19. He was born and raised in Miami, AZ but had lived in the Tucson area since 1970. Ruben is survived by his wife of 41 years, Darlene. Other survivors include his son Robert of Lynden, WA; Ronnie of Sherman Oaks, CA; Ricky of Tucson; his parents, Ramon and Dolores Reyes of Miami; brother Ray of Kingman; sisters Virginia Reyes Kramer of Manhatta, KS; and Elizabeth Reyes Schmude of Peoria, AZ; five granddaughters and five nieces and nephews. Ruben graduated from Miami High School in 1960. He received a Bachelors degree in secondary education from Northern Arizona University where he played football on scholarship. Later he received a Master of Education degree from the same university. Ruben had a teaching career that spanned 34 years. In his early teaching years he taught in Blythe and Whittier, CA. From 1970 to 1996 he taught at Canyon Del Oro High School where he was also the assistant varsity basketball coach. One of his most memorable thrills as a coach was when CDO won back to back state basketball championships in 1977 and 1978. Ruben retired from teaching in 1996, but in 2000 he returned to teaching and taught for three more years at Amphitheater Middle School. Ruben was an energetic and vigorous person who made everyone feel like he was their best friend. He touched the lives of family, friends, and students alike. No one ever lived life more fully than he did. His wonderfully broad smile was a gift he left embedded in our memories. We will dearly miss our beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend. God bless you, Ruben. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM on March 25 at the Adair Funeral Home located at 8090 Northern Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ruben Reyes Memorial Basketball Fund at any Bank of America Branch, Acct. #004653031545, or may be left at Adair Funeral Home, Avalon Chapel.

To the Reuben Reyes Family,

The Ray Arrona Family from Miami want to extend our deepest sympathies to you all. When Reuben was playing sports at Miami High School, I was just in 8th grade. He was one of my idols. He was a GREAT ATHLETE and an even better person. Additionally, I had a crush on his sister Virginia at that early age.

Recently, I moved back to Arizona from Georgia and I consider myself so lucky to have interacted with both Darlene & Reuben in the last Miami High Multi-year Class Reunion and more recently, interaction with the current one that is being planned.

I am in shock as we just met no more than a week or so ago. I can say that I have never met anyone as congenial and warm as Rueben. May you you cherish and be guided by the memories and example of this beautiful soul. Know that your loved one was also loved and revered by many including myself. May God bless you all and bring comfort in the difficult days ahead.

Love,

Ray Arrona and the Arrona Family
