With sincere gratitude I add to his eulogy:
I too served as a gardener for Professor Joaquim Duarte. My tenure in his cactus patch was served during the Thunderbird 1966-´67 class year and I may have a few remaining cactus spines to prove it.
I too drove The Professors´ Cadillac Convertible once. During the 1966-67 class year, his Cady was white with white cloth top and red leather interior.
I drove it the day Che Guevara was shot in Bolivia, of course, unknown to us until later that day. Professor Duarte asked me to take the then Minister of the Economy of Bolivia out to lunch at Pinnacle Peak. Just the Minister and me. I don´t know why he asked me, I just said. "Yes." I´m glad I did.
Pinnacle Peak was then a distant but fun restaurant up on a hill pretty much out in the sticks. After lunch, headed back down the hill with the top down and the radio on - a program interruption announced the death Che Guevara in Bolivia. The Minister anxiously got me to a telephone booth (no cells then) and called Bolivia to verify the safety of his family.
Professor Duarte hosted many interesting and important visitors and shared those experiences by including us, his devoted students, in those amazing experiences. What an excellent Professor; so enthusiastic directly involving us with the issues and people of Latin America.
With sincere gratitude I add to his eulogy: Accomplished and beloved, Professor Joaquim Duarte is sorely missed and dearly remembered by his friends, colleagues and his students with whom he generously shared his knowledge, wisdom and experience with great enthusiasm. Thank you, Professor Duarte.

I was his gardener in 1977 and drove his cherry red Cadillac convertible to get his laundry. He worked a room of Thunderbird donors with a butterfly- like charm during his parties with an ease l will never forget. His roses were my pride and he was a character similar to others there of a bygone age. A pleasure to have known him. Frank Jent - one of rare SWISS MIM’s.

I just read of the passing of Dr. Duarte. While attending Thunderbird from 83-84, he was an icon as Dean of Int'l Studies. I worked for him in his home cataloging all of his articles, magazines and books about Portuguese speaking countries. I have fond memories of our conversations. May he rest in peace.

Joaquim was a beloved colleague. I will always remember him for his wit, charm, intellect and his phenomenal network of friends and colleagues. He was one of the most knowledgeable people I have known. I thank him for always being a friend.

Dr. Duarte was well known and well liked by all students while at Thunderbird. I was PUB manager in 1984 - 85 and served him a few Bohemia beers as he talked with students. He was always wiling to engage with students and was curious about us as people - not just as students. That was a unique trait of his and another example of what makes Thunderbird unique.
RIP Dr. Duarte and enjoy a cold beer!
