Charles McCarthy Obituary

On January 21, 2019, Charles Christopher McCarthy, age 68, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Barbara McCarthy (nee Boudreau) for 46 years; devoted father of Christopher McCarthy and his wife Caitlin Bell, Catherine McCarthy Lehr and her husband Donald, Daniel McCarthy and his wife Katherine Berry, and Peter McCarthy and his wife Megan; adoring Pop Pop of Jonathan, Susannah, Charles, Philip, Ari, Oliver, and an eagerly awaited grandchild expected in August. He is also survived by many other loving family members.Charlie was born in Manhattan, New York, the only child of the late Charles and Susan (Hendrick) McCarthy. He grew up in Queens and was educated at Saint Camillus Elementary School and Nazareth High School. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. After their wedding, Charlie and Barbara relocated to Maryland, where Charlie earned his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and enjoyed a 46-year career as an Engineer and Program Manager with Westinghouse (later Northrop Grumman). Family and faith formed the center of Charlie's life. He loved playing chess, debating the finer points of grammar, and entertaining his grandchildren. He was the family handyman, the quintessential teller of funny stories, and a devoted Jeopardy! fan (answering nearly every question correctly). Charlie especially loved spending time with Barbara -whether going for walks, doing the daily crossword puzzle, dining out, or traveling to far-flung parts of the world, they always found joy and contentment in each other's company.A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 10 a.m., at Saint Pius X Church (6428 York Road, Baltimore, MD, 21212) with interment to follow. Friends and family are invited to stay for a reception at Saint Pius thereafter. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers (donate.maryknoll.org); or to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org).

Our family met Charlie, Barbara, and their family in 1993 when we were lucky enough to move on their street in Baltimore. All these years later we are still friends. Charlie was funny, kind, smart, and thoughtful. Anyone who ever met him thought he was one of the best human beings they ever met. He had a way with people, for sure, and we all loved him. And he had a rare gift with children. They knew he took them seriously, he saw good things in them, and they knew he cared. Heaven just received a genuine angel who was made on earth. We send our love to all of you. He was the best kind of man, and all of you, I know, will carry on the amazing legacy he gave you. We send our prayers and hugs. Love, The Shumways

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
