Hicks Mortuary is announcing funeral service for Mr. A. L. “Possum” McLendon Jr. of Center, Texas (71). Mr. A L “Possum” McLendon Jr. was born on January 6, 1955, in Carthage, Texas to the late Arlandus and Addie B Williams McLendon. Mr. McLendon was raised in Timpson, Texas. A. L. died Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Center, Texas. Funeral service for Mr. A. L. McLendon Jr is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church located at 617 Hopkins Street, Center, Texas. Eulogist will be Dr. Freddie Wilson.
Possum developed a passion for horses at an early age. He played a significant role in establishing the trail rides and backwoods races that remain cherished traditions today. His most well-known horses, Old Henry and Psycho, were forces to be reckoned with and helped make Possum a well-known and respected figure throughout East Texas. Last but not lease, Possum was a skilled welder.

Sister: Gwendlyn (Archie) McLendon Moss
Nephew: Pastor Carl McLendon (Pam) of Nacogdoches, Texas
Godson: Tracy Townsen of Mt. Enterprise.
