Alexander Middleton Jr.

Mr. Alexander Middleton, Jr. was born April 9, 1948, in Columbia, South Carolina.  He was the oldest child of the late Alexander Sr. and Vertelle Lydia Middleton.  He departed this life on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Mr. Middleton was educated in the public schools of Richland County, South Carolina and graduated from     C. A. Johnson High School, Class of 1966.  He attended Clemson University, being among the first African Americans to attend the school.  He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Miami.  Mr. Middleton had a successful career which spanned the world of finance, entrepreneurship, and culminated in his retirement from the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) as a senior executive.

 

Mr. Middleton was baptized at an early age and joined Greenview First Baptist Church in the Greenview Community of Columbia, South Carolina.  He was a gifted pianist who used his musical talents in service to the Lord in churches everywhere he lived, ranging from being the church pianist to choir director to minister of music.

 

Mr. Middleton was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Sr. and mothers, Vertelle Lydia Middleton and Earnestine Middleton.

 

Mr. Alexander Middleton, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, Avery Middleton; daughters, Sherry (ReKeithen) Miller and Rosalind Dennis; sons, Brent Middleton and Leon Wimbush, Jr. (Lynn Roxas); sisters, Joice (Walter “Skip”) Watson and Vertell Burgess; brother, Bernardo (Josie) Middleton; grandchildren, Gianna & Jackson Miller, Leonje S. Wimbush, and Sebastian Blake; nieces; nephews; and a host of loving family and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

 

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a viewing at Leevy’s Funeral Home on Friday, August 8, 2025, from 2 PM to 6 PM at 1831 Taylor Street, Columbia, SC.  A funeral service in honor of Mr. Alexander Middleton, Jr. will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11 AM at Greenview First Baptist Church at 101 Isaac Street, Columbia, SC.  This will be followed by burial at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC.   Floral arrangements may be sent to Leevy’s Funeral Home.
