Alfred B. Wertz, 95, of Hellertown, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Gail S. Daley-Wertz, with whom he shared a devoted marriage since February 23, 1993.
Born on October 2, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey, Alfred was the son of the late Cora (Bluett) Ritter. He proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War, a chapter of his life marked by honor and dedication.
Alfred enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a computer programmer and engineer. His professional journey included service at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Parsippany–Troy Hills, New Jersey, work as an engineer at Bell Laboratories, and later employment as a computer programmer for the State of New Jersey. His career reflected both his keen intellect and his forward-thinking approach to emerging technologies.
A charming, warm, and sophisticated gentleman, Alfred thrived in the company of others and maintained a wide and cherished circle of friends. Sunday mornings were reserved for jazz brunches at the family home—gatherings filled with music, conversation, and laughter. Friends flowed freely through both the home and his workshop, always welcomed by Alfred’s easy grace and generous spirit.
In his younger years, Alfred was most at home on the water, sailing his beloved Le Bon Tempsalong the Hudson River on many weekends with his wife and children. A man of many talents and boundless curiosity, he was especially passionate about building and restoring cars, with a particular fondness for classic muscle cars. He also took great pride in building his own airplane—an accomplishment that spoke to his superior mechanical skill and fearless ingenuity. An avid traveler, Alfred journeyed across the country with his wife and son, taking in the vast and varied beauty of the nation he so dearly loved.
In addition to his wife, Gail, Alfred is survived by his children, Stephanie Anne (Stephen) Cecchini of Fairhope, Alabama, and John V. (Christina) DeLouisa of Clark, New Jersey; five grandchildren, Dylan (Rebecca) Cecchini, Cole (Jeremy) McDoniell, Michael DeLouisa, Andrew DeLouisa, and Elle Cecchini; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be privately held at the family home. Expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.heintzelmancares.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., Hellertown.
Flowers may be sent to the home and/or memorial contributions may be made in Alfred B. Wertz’s name to the American Cancer .

When I saw either you or Gail come in to CVS, I knew a friendly face was coming up to my counter. You even recognized me many years later when I ran into you at Giant. Such a truly nice man. I am sad that I won't bump in to you again here on this plane, but I'll see you again some day.

Our dear Alfred, your laughter, love, loyalty, friendship, and guidance will be genuinely missed. Your voice is one that I can never forget! Our family times were incomparable. I remember fondly being a little girl playing with John in Washington Square, as you and Mom sat nearby quietly chatting and laughing softly. Your calm presence has been a peaceful respite in this oft hectic world. All who heard your voice and laughter delighted in its lovely cadence. I will miss you more than you will ever know and I thank you for your constant love and support. Rest in peace, Alfred.

Alfred, you now graduated from fresh water to salt water. You stand relieved from your watch. A job well done fellow navy veteran. America thanks you for your service to our country in the defense of freedom. The final volley has sounded and taps is about to begin, ending a successful career as a nation’s defender. Smooth sailing shipmate.
