TED's Obituary

Former longtime Sonora resident Ted Halling was born on Nov. 6, 1939, in Missoula, Montana, and passed away on Aug. 30, 2025 in Davis, California. He moved from Montana to Monterey, California, in 1942 with his mother and sister. He graduated from Monterey Union High School in 1958 and took several classes at Monterey Peninsula College. From 1962 to 1968 he served in the 149th Armor Division of the Army National Guard.He lived in Monterey until moving with his wife, Judy, and two daughters to Sonora in 1972. Ted managed the automotive department of the Montgomery Ward store on South Washington Street and later worked for Reno's Goodyear. He loved to bowl and belonged to a league at the Sonora Family Bowl.Ted and Judy were very involved parents in Sonora Parent Nursery School with their daughters. It was there that they met a small group of other parents with whom they still remain friends after 53 years. Ted greatly enjoyed spending time with these friends.In 2004, Ted and Judy moved to Davis to live close to their daughters and grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Indorato; stepfather, Benny Indorato; sister, Joy Pavao, and brother-in-law, Bob Pavao. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his loving daughters Becky Hanna (James) and Sherry Swithenbank; his grandsons Nick Hanna and Derek Swithenbank; his granddaughter Alexandra Hanna; his half-sister Patti Long, of Georgia; his cousin Mary Lugone Hancock (Bart), of Sonora; and several nieces and nephews in Utah, Colorado, Norway and Monterey.Burial will be at the Davis Cemetery and Arboretum on Sept 9. A celebration of life will be held at the Smith Funeral Home chapel in Davis on Sept. 26.In lieu of flowers, you might consider donating to the Yolo County SPCA (P.O. Box 510, Davis, CA 95616. Website: yolospca.org). This is where Ted and Judy got their sweet rescue dog, Freckles. She became Ted's best buddy for 15 years.
