Anita G. Gattorna, 89, wife of the late John R. Gattorna of Raytown, passed away quietly with family by her side on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at Overland Park Regional Hospital. Ann was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Chester A. and Anna C. Sample on July 21, 1928. She met and later married the love of her life, John R. Gattorna, on November 26, 1947, in Chicago and remained married to her loving husband 51years. Ann worked as an Assistant Underwriter for American International Group (AIG), later retiring at age 65 after 20+ years with AIG. After retirement, she volunteered at Holy Spirit Catholic School and then later volunteered at Overland Park Regional Hospital until she was 86. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle player and enjoyed going to church every Sunday and reading the prayers of her missal. Ann is truly remembered for how she loved and cherished her husband “Jack” of 51 years and supported and loved her three children, all six of her grandchildren and her seven great-grandchildren. She loved holding all the family babies as that gave her real joy and peace. Ann is also remembered for being a great sounding board for her family. She was practical in many ways, and always put family ahead of herself. In conclusion, there was an old saying the whole family knew very well, dubbed by Jack, her husband: “She who must be obeyed”, sums it all up. Ann was preceded in death by her husband John Gattorna; her parents; her brother; her mother-in-law; her brother-in-law, Dave Gattorna; and her precious grandson, Sean Gattorna, of Phoenix, AZ. She is survived by her son Michael Gattorna and his wife Cindy of Phoenix, AZ; daughter Susan Barreca and her husband Ralph of Kansas City; and daughter Janet Rogers of Overland Park, KS; five grandchildren: Anthony Barreca and family, Jon Rogers and family, Michelle DeMartino and family, Laura Julian and family, and Ryan Gattorna. Ann has seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Lung Association or the Alzheimer’s Association of Kansas City. A private family service was held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Raytown, MO, on December 9, 2017. Condolences may be offered at www.passantinobros.com
