Arthur "Bill" B. Nunn, Jr.

Arthur Bayne ?Bill? Nunn, Jr., of Roanoke passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur B. Nunn, Sr. and Bessie Ellinger Nunn, and by his beloved wife, Dorothy ?Polly? Huffman Nunn. Surviving are his children, Bonnie Dodson and her husband Keith, of Roanoke; Art Nunn, and his wife Judy, of Roanoke, Amy Nunn, of Forest, VA, Kim Dent, and her husband Leon, of Roanoke, and Laurie Koszarek, and her husband Kevin, of Spartanburg, SC. Surviving also are nine grandchildren and six great grand-children. Bill Nunn was a native of Goshen, VA, and a 1943 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. He served with great distinction in WW-II as a combat engineering officer in the Third Army, in Europe, where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in heavy combat.Following the war, Bill married the love of his life, Polly, raised five children, and worked as Vice President of a successful quarrying and stone crushing business. He retired to enjoy his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A man of deep and abiding personal faith, Bill also spent a great deal of time serving Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, and his expanded church family. Up until a few weeks before he was called home, Bill would visit church members who were sick and in need of a friendly face.Throughout his life, Bill Nunn carried with him a deep love of God, of family, of country, and of VMI. He was a Patriot and a Keydet to the very end. Bill?s life can be summed up in three words: kindness, humor, and honor. He was one of the genuinely nicest people in the world, and he loved to make people laugh, usually by poking fun at himself. His sense of personal honor was beyond reproach. By his presence, we were all enriched, and by his passing we are all somewhat diminished. A Service celebrating Bill?s life will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 1:30 PM at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road, Roanoke with Rev. Bart Smith officiating. Family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 PM just prior to service in church. Private family interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Bill?s name be made to either Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, or to the VMI Alumni Association.
