Arthur's Obituary

Arthur Lewis left his earthly home for a peaceful eternity on Sunday, February 8,2026. He was born in Oxford Mississippi on June 15, 1938, and made his way with his family to Gary, IN at the age of six. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1957, he spent a short stint in the Army and was honorably discharged. Coming home he worked a number of jobs, but excelled as a very astute businessman. In addition to owning a bar and nightclub, Lew’s Lounge, he owned a liquor store, Coaches Corner. Arthur was such an affable person and loved everyone.

Those who preceded him in death were his parents, Ernest and Johnice Lewis; sons, Arthur Lewis Jr. and Richard Lewis; four brothers: Thomas Lewis, Edgar Lewis, Ernest Lewis Jr., David Lewis; and one lone sister, Josephine Lewis-Brooks; father-in-law, Lawrence Hampton, mother-in-law, Maple Johnson; and his Special dog of 15 ½ years, BJ Lewis.

When he walked into a room, it lit up like a fireball. He was the center of attention and will be missed. Arthur leaves behind a loving wife, Langawa (Coach); two brothers: Robert (Wanda) Lewis and Paul (Charlotte) Lewis; two children: Terry (Gina) Lewis; and Montrell (Ni-Ni) Rice-Lewis; twelve grandchildren, 18 great-grand-children a host of nieces and nephews;  brothers-in-law: Steve McCray, Fredreick, Alfred, and Jimmie Johson, Robin Hampton; sisters-in-law: Pauletta (Jack) Daniels and Cordia Hampton a dear friend, James Pharms; a “forever” friend, Margo Wainwright; and a special niece, Niecy Lewis-Ward, and aunt, Mae Helen Dantzer.
