Barbara Anne Bachman Chazal, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Big Elm Rehab Center in Kannapolis, NC, where she had been taken due to the approach of Hurricane Florence.  Her daughter Anne had been with her since her evacuation from Morehead City NC.  Prior to that she had been a resident of Harborview Rehabilitation and Health Care Center where she had been cared for by the outstanding staff at the facility as well as her son John and daughter-in-law Dr. Nicole D’Andrea.Mrs. Chazal was born on July 10, 1934 in Chicago, IL to Harold B. and Mina J. Bachman.  The family relocated to Gainesville, Florida in 1948 when her father was appointed as Director of Bands at the University of Florida.  She attended P. K. Young High School in Gainesville, and went on to Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fl where she received a BS Degree in Journalism in 1956.  While at FSU she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and she remained an active alumna for many years.  She participated in a number of campus activities and organizations, and was elected as Permanent Vice-President of the Class of ’56.After graduation, she worked for Eastern Airlines in Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC before accepting a teaching position at Lake Weir High School in Marion County, FL.  Later in her career she worked for the Marion County School System as a Social Worker, and for Marion County Mental Health Services as a Benefits Advisor.In 1963, Barbara married Louis L. Chazal and they resided in Ocala, FL for 47 years prior to relocating to Morehead City NC.  In her later years she found relaxation in her crocheting producing beautiful pieces for friends, family and charity.  She was also the family historian who maintained many records, photos and articles about family members.  These are currently being memorialized in a series of family history articles for posterity.Her greatest joy was spending time with her three grand-daughters of whom she was immensely proud.  She was always excited to share their latest successes and to hear about their latest adventures.She is survived by her daughter, Anne Cole Chazal of Richmond, VA; son, John Philip Chazal III and wife, Dr. Nicole M. D’Andrea of Morehead City, NC; brother David D. Bachman and wife, Gaye of Tallahassee, FL; and grandchildren Yvonne, Natalie, and Vanessa Chazal of Morehead City.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Louis L. Chazal and her brother Clark H. Bachman.Barbara’s children and grandchildren are very grateful to all who have expressed condolences and sympathies.  She was a caring and generous woman, and it is well reflected in those she called friends and family.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leo Mann Senior Center, c/o Carteret Co. Friends of Aging, 3820 Galantis Dr., Morehead City, NC, 28557.   In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held.
