Barbara's Obituary

Barbara Mae Hawkins, 72 years young, departed this earthly life for eternal rest on Thursday, August 28, 2025. She transitioned at the University of Virginia Medical Center, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on July 19, 1953, in a small area of Nelson County, Virginia, called Faber, Barbara Mae was the daughter of William and Thelma Dawson. She grew up in a loving and caring environment, where her parents instilled in her the importance of hard work and family. As a child, Barbara was energetic and independent, proudly titled herself "Daddy's Girl."

Barbara was baptized and accepted Christ early in her life and was heavily involved in her church. She joined Union Ridge Baptist Church, where she became the youth Sunday school teacher, youth choir director, and a missionary member. By faith, she accomplished her goal of becoming an ordained deacon. Working in the healthcare field for over 40 years, including her time at Legacy Hospice before retiring, Barbara dedicated herself to caring for and supporting those who could not advocate for themselves. In her personal life, she was an avid video gamer, proudly holding the highest score record for Mario Kart in her household. Barbara enjoyed watching good movies and spending time with her four best friends. One of the many events she looked forward to was traveling to visit her grandchildren in Utah. Barbara will truly be missed, as she was dearly loved by those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Lewis Dawson II and Thelma Patsy Page Dawson.

Barbara leaves behind her son, Gregory Dawson (Tia) of Charlottesville, Virginia; her son, Phillip Dawson of Salt Lake City, Utah; and her daughter-in-love, Emily Stevenson of Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: LaDesha Dawson, Derek Baker, Kason Dawson, Keon Stevenson, Kaleyah Stevenson, Phillip Dawson Jr., and Gregory Dawson, as well as one great-grandchild, Carter Yates. Barbara is mourned by her two sisters, Jean Taylor of Keswick, Virginia, and Darlene Brown of Charlottesville, Virginia; her three brothers, William Lewis Dawson III and Kenneth Ray Dawson, both of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Clarence Henry Dawson of Faber, Virginia; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Barbara's family would not be complete without mentioning her four lifelong friends: Jimmy Hawkins, Patricia Howard, Hilda Wood, and Sarah Baker.
