Barbara J. Thompson, of the North Hills, and formerly Bloomfield, died peacefully on February 27, 2026. She fought a courageous battle surrounded by family and friends for the past few months. She was the beloved daughter of the late Kathryn S. Thompson and William H. Thompson. She was preceded in death by her cherished sister Carol Golebiewski (Brian). She is survived by her loving sisters, Dianna (Robert) Williams, Linda (Michael) Diskin, Kathleen Fashion, Francie Thompson, and Pauline (Nick) Calabrese, as well as her treasured friend, Robert Scipione. She was a devoted Godmother and adoring aunt and great aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was an award-winning journalist, with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from Duquesne University. She was an excellent writer, cartoonist and conversationalist, who could talk with a king or a child with ease. She was employed by Duquesne University and West Penn Hospital, where she helped coordinate medical students arriving in Pittsburgh from all over the world. She was a fabulous dresser, who had a good heart, a deep intellect and an exquisite sense of humor. She was proud of never having been accused of being “well-behaved.”
The family is deeply grateful for the exceptional care given by Dr. Makala Wang, the nurses and the staff at Shadyside Hospital, and extends profound gratitude to Mark, Kevin and the entire cardiac team at the Hospital.
