Bertha's Obituary

Bertha E. LaVigne, 97, passed away after a long illness, Saturday, August 9, 2025, in Lake Placid, New York.

Born October 26, 1927 in Stoney Creek, New York she was the daughter of George P. and Grace M. (Mason) Harrington.

Bertha graduated from Warrensburg High School in 1945, she then went on to complete some college studies. Bertha went on to work at Nugent’s Clothing Store, Martha’s, Cumberland Farms, and Agway.

On March 30, 1946, Bertha married her beloved husband Martin E. LaVigne, they spent many years together and cherished every moment. The two spent at least 40 years on Safford Road in Argyle, they planted lots of flowerbeds and fed the birds.

Bertha was a strong-minded person, when she was just 32 years old, she beat her battle with breast cancer.

Bertha had many hobbies and enjoyed doing many things, above all Bertha enjoyed going on picnics with her daughters. A hobby she found through the years was playing the organ and piano. She would also make cakes for Dennis, Amy, or for any special occasion.

Bertha was also very active in her community, she had a membership with The Grange, Warrensburg Alumni, Eastern Star, The Rebbecca’s, Argyle EMS, various bowling leagues, and she would even sing with Sweet Adelines.

In addition to her parents, Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Martin E. LaVigne; daughter, Linda M. Johnson; and sister Josephine Masterson.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Patricia (Skip) Columbetti of Belfair, Washington; grandchildren, Dennis (Sue) Johnson of Whitehall, and Amy (Joe Boduch, Jr.) Johnson of Warrensburg; brother, Donald Harrington of Taberg, New York; also several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

At the family’s wishes, services will be private.

The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Keene Valley Neighborhood House, Rich, and staff for taking such good care of Bertha over the past 5 years.
