Brian Lee Athey Sr., 67, passed away on November 6, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 23, 1958, Brian lived a life full of laughter, adventure, and devotion to the people he loved most. Brian grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, where he met his high school sweetheart, Deb, the love of his life. He was the “bad boy” who stole her heart — and together they spent more than 50 years side by side, riding, traveling, and building a beautiful family and life together.After graduating high school, Brian joined the U.S. Navy, which brought them to Virginia — the place they would eventually call home. He served his country with pride and carried that same sense of loyalty and strength throughout his life.Brian was known for his big heart, his love of the open road, and his passion for motorcycles, country and rock music. Brian’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and papa who could always be counted on — whether it was to lend a helping hand, or tell a story that made you laugh just when it was needed most. To his children and grandchildren, he was more than family — he was their hero.Brian devoted many years to coaching baseball, basketball, and football, as well as serving in the Boy Scouts. He was more than just a coach — he was a mentor and role model to countless children, many of whom have gone on to do great things in their own lives. His guidance, encouragement, and belief in others left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of learning from him.Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Alberta Athey. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Deb Athey; their children, Brian Athey Jr, and his wife, Barbi, Patrick Athey, and his wife, Angela, Christina Athey, and Donald Athey and his wife, Ciera, one sister, Becky Hiedemann and her husband, Erich; seven grandchildren, Michael Williams, Hannah Athey, Sophie Athey, Elizabeth Athey, Adalei Athey, Lilah Athey, and Millie Athey; two brothers-in-law Greg Mace, and his wife, Diane, and Joe Mace, and his wife, Elizabeth, and many additional cherished nieces, nephews, and friends that were his chosen family. Brian didn’t want a sad goodbye, so his loved ones will gather for a Celebration of Life at a later date to share stories, music, and memories of the man who meant so much to so many.Those who knew Brian will remember his strength, his laughter, and the way he lived every mile of his journey to the fullest. “Gone riding but never gone from our hearts.”
