Bruce Elvin Basham Sr., 84, quietly answered the call of the Lord on Friday, June 13, 2014, with his family at his bedside. He was born on December 24, 1929, to the late William Irvin Basham and Rowena Kasey Basham in Franklin, Va. Early in life, Bruce accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Bellvue Baptist Church, Hardy, Va. He later moved his membership to Green Spring Baptist Church and was an active member until his health failed. Bruce was educated in Bellvue Elementary School. He entered into the Army and served his country in the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He retired from Roanoke Electric Steel Company, Roanoke, Va. Bruce was united in marriage to Lena P. Quarles for over 55 years. This union was blessed with four children. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brothers, James Matthew Basham, Donald Basham, Erving Glenn Basham, and grandchild, Demetri Wayne Basham. Left to cherish his memories are his children, Bruce (Edna) Basham Jr., Linda (Curtis) Wright, Wayne (Miranda) Basham, Derwin Basham; seven grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth Allen (Delores) Basham, Lynwood Arlen (Mary) Basham, Manuel Edward (Cindy) Basham and Bernard Raymond Basham; sister, Mary Ann Miller; sisters-in-law, Mary B. Evans, Shirley Q. Bonds, Phyllis June Quarles, and Vera Quarles; brother-in-law, Robert Quarles; numerous of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Interment will be in Green Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Goodview, VA. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon for viewing. Condolences may be sent to www. Hamlar-Curtis.com.
