Bryce Luthens, 50, of Shakopee, formerly of New London, died Saturday, March 17th, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester. A celebration service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 24th at the First Lutheran of Norway Lake Church near New London. Visitation will be from 4-7:00 pm, Friday at the church and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be held at a later date at Lake Andrew Cemetery near New London. Wear your favorite camouflage. Memorials may be given to the Gift of Life Transplant House in Rochester, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fighting blood cancers or donor’s choice. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in New London.
Bryce Donald Luthens was born September 11, 1967, in Hutchinson, the son of Donald and Sonya (Erickson) Luthens. He grew up on Norway Lake where he enjoyed all of the shenanigans of living on the lake with the neighborhood kids. He graduated from New London High School with the Class of 1986. After graduation he attended the University of North Dakota (home of the Fighting Sioux) where he received a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics degree in 1992. He began working with Mathiowetz Construction Company in 1993 and was presented with his 25 year gold watch just last week. Bryce was united in marriage to Melissa Schroeder on September 22, 2001; eleven days after our county experienced the 9/11 attack. They lived in St. Louis Park and Shakopee where they enjoyed neighborhood “parties”.
Bryce enjoyed spending time and traveling with his wife and friends but was happiest when he was hunting on Marsh Lake or in North Dakota or sitting on 24 inches of ice in northern Minnesota. This was his true passion. He was a sports fan who enjoyed listening to KFAN, channel flipping and calling his Mom to discuss the game. He was a jokester with a crazy sense of humor who could always get his friends laughing or riled up. He was proud of many things in his life including his cross country and track teammates, his brothers at the Beta House, his pilot’s license, his Eagle Scout Award, the accomplishments of the Little Crow Ski Team, the hunting titles by his Spankylabs girls and the many projects he worked on and completed for Mathiowetz. Bryce wants you to know that the beer fridge will always be full.
Bryce is survived by his wife, Melissa of Shakopee, mother, Sonya of New London, brother-in-law, Michael Schroeder of Willmar; hunting companions, Jezebel and Madison, aunts, uncles, cousins and many kind and true friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Don, his grandparents and uncles Roger and David.
A special thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at Mayo Clinic, Methodist Hospital and St. Francis Cancer center for their compassion and treatment.
