Burris Newman Holcombe, Jr., “Buddy,” passed away peacefully on July 10, 2019 after a short battle with cancer.
Buddy was born in 1945 in Richmond, Virginia. His father was in the Air Force and the family moved many times throughout his childhood. They lived all over the world including North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Japan. The family settled in Georgetown, Kentucky where he graduated from Georgetown High School. Buddy served in the United States Air Force. Later, he worked at various roles in the medical field including as a physician’s assistant, lab tech, nursing instructor, pharmacy tech and others. Most importantly, Buddy would tell you he was a follower of Jesus Christ. He was active in church and ministries throughout his life. Later in life, he served in the Stephen Ministry at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church and has led the Grief Share group for the last 13 years. He loved to share his faith with all that he came into contact with.
The biggest blessing in Buddy’s life was his family. He was the father of seven amazing children, sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandson – all of whom he was extremely proud. Thirteen years ago, Buddy met the love of his life, Jean Hickey, and she has been by his side ever since.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Burris and Margaret Holcombe and son, Danny Holcombe. He is survived by his beloved, Jean; his children, Teresa (Tim) Shannon, Carol Ireton, Daron Holcombe, Carrie Holcombe, Doug (Suzi) Holcombe, Leslie (Billy) Walters; sisters, Pat Stacy and Ginny Holcombe; sixteen grandchildren, one great grandson, many nieces and nephews and close friends.
A service of praise and celebration for the life of Buddy will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 11AM in the chapel of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. Burial will take place later that day at the Georgia National Cemetery.
