Not sure what to say?

My pediatric endocrinologist from 1990-99 until I became pregnant and he could no longer see me. The best, kindest gentle and wonderful dr I’ve ever had. I’ve looked online for him over the years but today is the first time my results actually found him and my heart goes out to his children and grandchildren he was an amazing dr so I know he was an even greater father, grandfather. May God continue to bless your family.

At Virginia Mason Hospital, Dr. Mahoney carried my new baby daughter so I could see her after a difficult delivery...The words he spoke, I will ALWAYS remember..."Say thanks Mama, for giving me life." He was the PERFECT Pediatrician...SO KIND!

Dr. Mahoney was my pediatrician since 1969. He was such a gentle good man who knew his field very well and was a great doctor. I still remember him to this day. I am so sorry for your loss, my prayers go out to your family. Dr. Mahoney helped hundreds if not thousands of his patients. He will be missed and never forgotten.

Dr. Mahoney was the first DR. That over saw my care when I was diagnosed with diabetes back in 1995. I was young but his explanation of importance of my health has stayed with me all of these years he made a huge impression on me with regards to my health which has stayed with me to this day. He is the reason I am always investigating new research about diabetes. He will always be remembered and I send blessing and healing prayers to his family.

My condolences to the entire family. In 1979 I interviewed Dr. Mahoney as a prospective pediatrician for my first child prior to his birth in 1979. I had interviewed several pediatricians in various locations, but once I met & spoke to Dr. Mahoney there was no question in my mind that he would be my choice. I turned 33 shortly before my son was born, which in 1979 was considered an "older first time mother". Dr. Mahoney said, something such as, "As a first time older mother you will no...

Dr. Mahoney was my pediatrician. I was honored that he was a part of my journey as a pediatric patient with Turner Syndrome. I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

John Dwyer attended the Opera with Pat & Katy for over 25 years.

On behalf of the Dwyer family we would like to say how sad we are to hear of Pat's passing. We created many fond memories with Pat and the Mahoney family over the years. He will be missed.

Pat was a fellow physician, a friend , and a credit to the profession.
We will all miss him.

Mackenzie Smith MD

During my residency in Pediatrics Patrick was a role model teacher: compassionate, bright, curious, always with a twinkling wry humor. Later he cared for endocrine oddities from my practice: the more bizarre the more excited and involved he became. A model physician and a good, good fellow........ bob hauck

Obituary

C.'s Obituary

C. Patrick Mahoney died peacefully April 24, 2020 from complications of a hip fracture, just a few weeks short of his 91st birthday. He was born in a small town in Colorado. He met his future wife Katie Furstenberg on a Catholic parish sponsored hay ride and married in 1952. Pat graduated from University of Colorado Medical School in 1955. Served as a Captain in the Army. Then completed his pediatric residency at Stanford University Hospital/UW. He became board certified in both pediatrics and endocrinology. Pat was part of the University of Washington faculty from 1964-68 as an associate professor where he did research in thyroid disease, and genetic disorders. By this time, he had 7 children. He left research and joined Dr. Dick Dion, at the newly formed pediatric department at Virginia Mason in Seattle, seeing both general pediatrics and endocrine patients from 1968-1993. Pat had a large number of juvenile diabetics in his practice as well as patients suffering from diseases related to his other interests including cystinosis, Vitamin D-resistant rickets and thyroidology. As a clinician and researcher, he and his colleagues referred difficult and unusual cases from throughout the Northwest. Pat sympathized deeply with the parents and children who he treated and remained in touch with many grateful parents and patients decades later. During his career affiliations at UW, Virginia Mason and Seattle Children’s Hospital, he had over 20 publications in medical journals, contributed several chapters to compendium texts and shared findings in correspondence with innumerable researchers worldwide. Once all of his children were through college, he returned to his true love of research. This time with a focus on juvenile diabetes. Pat  mentored scores of pediatric residents, and pediatric endocrinology fellows, before retiring from Children’s Hospital at age 70.

He will be remembered for his intense desire to learn, quirky dry sense of humor, fierce competitiveness in family basketball games, enjoyment of golf, amazing ability to calm colicky grandchildren, and a love of service as a physician and as a parishioner of St. Bridget Catholic Church for over 40 years. After moving to Mirabella Retirement Community in downtown Seattle, he treasured his final years as a member of the warm and caring parish of Christ Our Hope Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his brother Jerry Mahoney of Denver, Colorado.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Katie, his 2 brothers Ron and John (Connie) Mahoney, 7 children Kevin (Lupe), Mike (Daisy), Jerry (Chris), Kathleen (Jim), Brian (Ligia), Susan (Dennis), Barbara (Tina), 14 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.  A family memorial Service was celebrated virtually online.

Donations may be made in his memory, to Virginia Mason Diabetes Research at Benaroya Institute or  Seattle Children’s Hospital.
