Obituary

Captain Bennard's Obituary

Captain Bennard L. Nelson, Jr., was born on February 1, 1963, to Bennard, Sr. and Joan Nelson in Houston, Texas. Bennard was known to his loved ones as “Billy” and his friends as “Dollar Bill.” Bennard accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior early in his life and was baptized at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Bennard was raised in Fifth Ward, aka “The Nickel.” He attended Langston Elementary School, where his mother was an educator.

The family later moved to Shepard Park Terrace, where Billy attended Black Middle School and Waltrip High School. He was a proud Cum Laude student of the graduating “Class of 1981.” Bennard went on to further his education at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. In the summer of 1984, he attended Advance Camp at Fort Riley in Kansas, and upon his return to PVAMU, he served in the Battalion Training Office for the Panther Brigade 1984-1985.

Bennard was commissioned into the Army Reserve Officer Reserve Training Corps (AROTC) on May 12, 1985, as a 2nd Lieutenant. Also, as an undergraduate student, Bennard pledged with the 1982 Spring line of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Rho Theta Chapter known as The Twilight Twelve. After years of fraternal service, he was appointed South Texas State Representative for the 9th District (2012-2018). Bennard was also a Life Member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

After graduating, Bennard began his military career in the summer of 1986, attending Signal Corps Officer Basic Course (Fort Gordon, Georgia) and Airborne school in the Fall of 1986 (Fort Benning, Georgia). Bennard was then stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, before being deployed to serve in the Gulf War. During his service, Bennard also received several awards and medals.

Bennard went on to meet the love of his life, Lorraine Patterson, and they married on July 15, 1995. Bennard and Lorraine began their life together with two lovely children from previous relationships, and later, the couple added two more beautiful children to their union. In 1997, Bennard stepped out on faith to start Legacee Environmental International Inc., reaching out to his childhood friend, Micheal R. Williams, to partner with him in that journey. Legacee has been established for 26 years and still provides excellent environmental services and leadership in waste management.

On Friday, April 26, 2024, at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston -Texas Medical Center, Bennard answered his heavenly Father’s call to begin his eternal journey.

Bennard was preceded in death by his parents, Bennard Sr. and Joan Nelson. Bennard leaves to cherish his memory his beautiful & devoted wife of 28 years Lorraine Patterson Nelson; four wonderful children, Candice Nicole Nelson, Benjamin Patterson, Cymone Sharda’ Nelson, and Rylee Joan Nelson; two brothers/cousins, John Brown (Chris) and Darrell R. Colbert (Jocie); special cousins, Sandra Lynn Colbert, Kimberly Colbert Guillory (Vernon), and Gregory Hathaway (Stephenie); honorary brother/friend, Michael R. Williams (Lisa), five godchildren, Malik Williams, Darrell Patterson, Keith Scott, Ayden Wilkins, and Julius Gabriel, and a host of family, friends, and colleagues.

Bennard was a loving and amazing husband, Father, and friend. Whether he was having fun with his beautiful children, vacationing with his loving wife, going on his annual hunting trip, or hanging “out” with “Da Bruh.” He always lived life to the fullest; his family was his world. Bennard “Billy” Nelson will truly be missed and was a living example of how friendship was and is essential to the soul.
