Chick Mathis, 90, of Wilmington, died Monday, January 6, 2014. He was the son of the late Carl N. Mathis and Pearl S. Mathis and is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Mathis, and his daughter, Meredith Mathis. Chick graduated from New Hanover High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.During his career, Chick served as a state-certified real estate appraiser. He worked for Willets Realty Company and retired from The Cooperative Bank for Saving, Inc., in 2001, where he was a vice president. For over 50 years, Chick was a member of the Wilmington Board of Realtors and served as a president, vice president, and member of the Board of Directors on both the local and state level. Chick was a charter member of St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he previously served on the diaconate. He also served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA and the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and he was a member of the Wilmington Rotary Club, American Legion, Cape Fear Country Club and Carolina Yacht Club. For over a ten-year period, Chick participated in the Azalea Festival. Chick was an avid sports fan and loved playing golf, fishing and watching UNC basketball and football. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014, at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow in the chapel. Donations may be made to the church at 1416 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, or a charity of your choice.
