Not sure what to say?

My family sends condolences to Denna and the Sherman family on the passing of Carl. My brother Ed first met Carl in 1959 when they were in training with the U.S. Air Force. They quickly forged a close friendship that lasted all their long lives. They were best buddies always and stayed in touch regularly. Now they are in Heaven together. Ed's grown children and grandchildren join me in wishing the Sherman family peace and God's blessings and comfort in this sorrowful time.

Our deepest and heartfelt sympathies to you Dena and your family. Carl was a wonderful neighbor and friend. Always with a helping hand. We love you. Wish we were closer to spend the evening with you and your family. Chuck and Linda Porter.

A sparkle in his eyes and a grin that would just make you happy to share time with him! Friends, customers, competitors, and fellow employees loved Carl. He was a gift to all of us!
Tom

Sincere condolences to your family. Love, Bill & Pat

Denna and Family, I am so sorry to hear this. We are all getting to that age but it is still hard to let go. We have many memories of our times in Canoga Park with good friends and neighbors. We are now living in St George and loving it. I remember Carl as a gentle giant. May God bless you with happy memories and good things to look forward to. Our love and best wishes. Dennis and Joan Dana

Denna , you and Carl hold a special place in my heart. I am so happy God put you in my life. I will always cherish all the times we were together. I often think about my visit to Utah. Y’all rolled out the Royal carpet for me. I especially enjoyed the guided tours and stopping and buying peaches. I long for those peaches whenever I make peach cobbler.

I pray that your memory of Carl will sustain you until we all see him again.

Obituary

Carl's Obituary

Carl Sherman passed away in peace at the age of 83.  Denna, his cherished wife of 62 years, and their family, were at his side.

Carl was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Upon graduation from University High School in 1959, he joined the U.S. Air Force, trained as a crew chief for the B-47 Bomber and was stationed at March Air Force Base, California. Carl was grateful for the opportunity to serve his country and, especially in his later years, relished the opportunity to engage with fellow Veterans.  On July 7, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, Denna Fillerup.  Following an honorable discharge, Carl and Denna returned to their hometown of Los Angeles, where they worked and raised their children.  Family time was often spent in the great outdoors, from beaches to mountains, including local day hikes, secluded campgrounds, high elevation backpacking, extraordinarily adventurous (often audacious!) road trips and lazy days on the beach.  He was an ardent supporter of his children and grandchildren in their various sporting activities.  He was also deeply involved with family focused church activities: memorably, Carl was a beloved and enthusiastic Boy Scout leader.  Carl enjoyed racquetball, folk music, his vegetable garden, crossword puzzles, American history, cooking for his family and world travel with Denna.  He felt profoundly connected to his Jewish ancestry and Eastern European roots.

In 1992, he moved his family to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he worked with Granite Furniture and Spring Air Mattress Company, eventually retiring in 2020 from RC Willey.  He was a respected team member, known for his strong work ethic and dedication to his customers.

Carl was an adult convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, maintaining a sincere love for his Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Carl is survived by Denna Sherman, their five children, Wendy (Ray) Lynott, Ryan (Genna) Sherman, Kevin (Emily) Sherman, Tara (John) Wittmaak, Heather Bryant, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Carl will long be remembered for his kind and tender heart, gracious manners, generous spirit, everlasting patience, quirky sense of humor and genuine compassion.

A funeral service, to include military honors, will be held at Veterans Cemetery (17111 S. Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah 84065) on Friday, April 25, 2025, at 12:00 PM.  A Celebration of Life reception will be held later that evening, at the Old Farm Park Ward (2700 W. 13400 S. Riverton, Utah 84065) from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
