We meet. We part. We say goodbye. So difficult with you. Always a great friend. I knew you since we met at the Bingham Elementary School at age five. Since then, we shared life together in so many ways. We had a great friendship, played hoops together especially for the illustrious Somerville High Basketball team. You patiently taught me to fish. We were drinking buddies, sometimes singing off tune on the banks of the Charles River. Many times, you welcomed me to your home on Christmas eve....

Carl was as good a neighbor as one could wish to have. The warmth he brought to the neighborhood was tangible, and will be missed. May he rest in peace.

My deepest condolences. Carl was such a nice guy. Always smiling. Always took the time to sit and chat and ask how everyone was doing.

Carleton M. Vining, Sr. of Somerville, passed away suddenly surrounded by his loving family on March 23, 2023. He was 77 years old. Carl was a lifelong Somerville resident playing basketball at Somerville High, Salem State and at the local parks. He later coached a Men's Softball team for many years and also the Somerville Pride Girls' League grades 5-8 basketball for 17 years and continued to watch "his girls" as they progressed to High School. His other passion, aside from his family, was fishing. Carl could talk fishing to anyone and everyone, and did! He was also known to be the nicest, most generous man who would do anything for everyone. You knew he really cared about you when he gave you one of his many nicknames. He was the much beloved husband of 30 years to Jo Ann Goggin-Vining. Loving and loved father to Pamela and her husband, Jim of Salem, NH, Scott and his wife Krissy of Woburn, Jennifer and her husband Paul of Billerica, Carleton Vining Jr. of Somerville and Stepfather to Jason and his wife, Megan of Chicago. Grandfather of Nicholas, Gina, Carly, Phillip, Scotty, Jordan, Colette, Ryan and Ethan. Great grandfather of Ava, Atlas, Gianna, and Jack. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway, Somerville, MA on Tuesday, March 28th from 2:00-6:00 P.M. Relatives and friends invited to attend.
