Carlos P. Cortez Obituary
Carlos P. Cortez, age 77, of Palestine, TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on March 22, 2022. He was born in Beeville, TX on June 28, 1944 to Armando and Lucia Cortez.
He made education his career and passion. After graduating Alvin Jr. College and the University of Houston, he earned his Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Sam Houston State University. He earned his 2nd Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Houston Baptist University. He received his Doctor of Education in Bilingual Education from Texas A&I University in 1982.
He taught at Brazosport ISD, Kingsville School District and Lon Morris College with a Fellowship at Sam Houston State University. He also taught at Windham School District for 40 years. Beto North School proclaimed on May 23rd, 2006, to be “Doc Carlos Cortez Day.”
He was heavily involved with the Green Room Group of Palestine. He spent a great part of his time befriending a great many people and touched their lives with advice, leadership and a counseling ear.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mike Cortez Jr, sister Alicia Ortiz (Henry) and his brother-in-law Romeo Barrera. He is survived by his former wife Gennie Rangel-Cortez. Sons Carlos Cortez Jr. (Sandra) and Christobal Cortez (Krystal). Daughters Catharyn Milbrandt (James) and Cynthia Cortez. Sisters Alma Gonzales (Oliver) and Andrea Barrera and sister-in-law Gloria Cortez. Granddaughters Lauren Hathcock and Isabella Cortez and great grandson Kevin John Crottie III.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated. Rosary and Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM, Thursday March 31st at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home. Mass will be at 10:00 AM, Friday April 1st, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palestine, TX. Interment at Restwood Memorial Park in Clute, TX, will be at a later date.
