Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side.
Carol was a devout Catholic and a founding member of St. Eugene’s Parish. She devoted her life to helping others through volunteer work and spreading the word of God.
Born and raised in Petaluma to Frank and Hermina Straub, she grew up on the family chicken ranch with her ten siblings. She attended St. Vincent’s Catholic grade school and high school. She left early to work at Mare Island during World War II. During this time, she met and married the love of her life, Angelo Deghi. They moved to Santa Rosa where they were happily married for 61 years, until his passing in 2007.
Carol was the quintessential wife and mother who loved to entertain. Her home and garden were great sources of joy where neighbors and friends enjoyed gathering.
Volunteer work was a passion, helping many through St. Vincent de Paul Society, St. Eugene’s Parish, Eucharistic Ministry, Adoration Chapel, Altar Flowers, and the “Rogenian” Teen Club. Carol’s door was always open to any young person in need and was available to listen with kindness, patience, and compassion.
Carol is survived by her children; Ron Deghi (Suzanne), and Cindy Gunderson, grandchildren; Jill Shubel, Amy Cline (Kevin), Heather Cavey (John), Christine McBride (Matt), and Russell Deghi (Liz), as well as eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and more friends than you can count.
Friends and family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 10:30 am at the Cathedral of St. Eugene, 2323 Montgomery Dr., Santa Rosa. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 6:00 pm at the LAFFERTY & SMITH COLONIAL CHAPEL, 4321 Sonoma Hwy., Santa Rosa. An elegant lady and committed Christian. She was the heart of the St. Vincent de Paul outreach at St. Eugene's Cathedral. Her thoughts were always focused on how to help the disadvantaged. She was also a tender-loving nurse-companion for her husband Ang as he struggled in later years. A model for us all.

Carol was a gold-standard Christian whose life was rooted in her faith and was seen daily in actively assisting anyone in need. There was no request she ever declined and no one she ever slighted. If the need was a sandwich, a bag of groceries, a hotel room, an appliance, a bus ticket, and especially a toy, she would scout the parish pantry and the St. Vincent de Paul store to provide it. Until we lost her, there was no greater hallmark of a great generation of parishioners and community workers at the cathedral. Monsignor James Gaffey
