Carolyn Lanning

Carolyn L. Lanning, 79, of Troy formerly of Athens, died Monday, March 23, 2026 at Kettering Health Dayton.  Born December 4, 1946 at Sheltering Arms Hospital, Athens, she was the daughter of the late Glenn L. Atkinson and Carrie Harris Atkinson.

Carolyn is survived by her husband of 59 years, William E. “Bill” Lanning of Troy; a son, John W. Lanning of Maiden, NC; and five grandchildren, Blake Lanning and Bryce Lanning both of Lincolnton, NC, Katie Lanning and Micah Lanning both of Troy and Josie Lanning of Casstown, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Scott A. Lanning; a brother, Charles Atkinson; and a sister, Elinore Atkinson

Carolyn is a 1965 graduate of Athens High School and later attended the Alexandria School of Nursing in Alexandria, VA.  Upon her husband, Bill’s retirement, the couple relocated to Tennessee to enjoy benefits of their lake home, before recently returning to Ohio.  Carolyn was very active with Cub Scouts and parenting organizations, as well as mentoring youth church groups.  She enjoyed fishing, gardening and crafting, especially artistic painting.

She was a member of The Valley Church, Troy Campus, Church of the Nazarene and Athens Chapter 175 Order of the Eastern Star.

A funeral service will be held Monday, March 30, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Gary Alton officiating.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.  Friends may call Monday from 12:00 noon until time of service at the funeral home.  The family wishes to recognize Kettering Health Dayton as well as Ohio Hospice of Dayton.  The family also requests that memorial donations may be made to Ohio Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420 in lieu of other forms of contributions.  Please share a memory, a note of condolence or sign the online register at www.jagersfuneralhome.com.
