Catherine's Obituary

Catherine Marie Garms, age 74 died Tuesday, September 2, 2025 in Gaylord, Michigan. Catherine was born on September 28, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, and is the daughter of the late Kenneth and Mildred (nee: Schiller) Kargel.

Catherine was the beloved wife of Howard Garms, with whom she shared a life full of love and cherished moments. She was the devoted mother of Nicole (Steve) Morey, Greg Garms and Aaron (Michelle) Garms, whose lives were profoundly shaped by her unwavering support and affection. Catherine's legacy continues through her adored grandchildren, Mary Morey, Casey Morey and Kaspian Garms, who brought immense joy to her later years. Her siblings, Shirley (Kenneth) Robinson, and Ricky (Judy) Kargel, further survive their dear sister. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Douglas Kargel, but the memories they created together remain a comfort forever. Catherine will also be missed by her nieces, nephews and great nephews.

Catherine's passion for knowledge and growth led her to proudly become a Michigan State University Master Gardener, an accomplishment that reflected her love for the natural world. Her high school graduation marked the beginning of a lifetime of learning and personal development. Catherine dedicated many years to the insurance industry, where her meticulous nature and administrative skills greatly benefited her colleagues and clients alike.

Gardening was Catherine's sanctuary, a place where her "green thumb" could bring beauty and life into the world. Her gardens were a testament to her patience and attention to detail, flourishing under her care. Catherine was very proud to say she volunteered for 2 years as a Master Gardener at the Henry Ford Estates. Catherine's love for all creatures great and small was evident, but none more so than for her cat Cali, who was a constant source of comfort and companionship.

In her younger years, Catherine's athletic talent shone through in the world of roller skating. At the young age of 16, she was crowned a State Champion, a testament to her dedication and grace.

Those who knew Catherine will remember her for the kindness she extended to everyone, her generosity that knew no bounds, and the gentle way she approached both people and life's challenges. Catherine's impact on the world was as beautiful and profound as the gardens she tended, and her memory will continue to inspire and influence all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial gathering will be Saturday, September 20th, 2025 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 A.M. at the Taylor Chapel of Howe-Peterson Funeral Home and Cremation Services located at 9800 Telegraph Rd., Taylor, MI 48180.
