Catherine Elaine (nee: Smith) Unnerstall
Catherine Elaine Unnerstall, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on February 27, 1945, Catherine’s body was donated to Washington University in St.Louis where her body will be studied. Catherine was the cherished daughter of Edwin and Virginia (nee: West) Smith and the beloved sister of Larry Smith.
Catherine’s life was defined by love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family. She married the love of her life, Carl Unnerstall, on June 15, 1963, ( 62 years ) and together they built a strong foundation rooted in faith, laughter, and deep care for one another. As a mother, she instilled values of compassion, resilience, and dedication in her children, always leading by example. Catherine worked for the Wright City School District as a lunch lady and in the cafeteria. After her children graduated, she worked for Schnucks as a cashier and then moved over to the pharmacy where she eventually retired. Catherine had a knack for connecting with people and was widely recognized, either as the kids' lunch lady or the cashier at Schnucks. She was affectionately known by many as everyone’s Grandma or mother. Catherine fulfilled her bucket list and traveled to every state. She loved to do crafts and made beautiful travel books.
She was the proud mother of Dean, Dale, Dennis, David Unnerstall, and Debra Moss, who carry forward her legacy of love and family devotion. Her role as a grandmother was one she held most dear, and her heart was fullest when surrounded by her grandchildren: Jacob Feger, Nicholas, Amanda, Dustin, Isabelle, Lindsey, and Collin Unnerstall; Lea Moss and Ali Stidham; Matthew Teffer; and Sofia Moknine. She was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Nathan and Jewell Unnerstall, and she now rests alongside her grandson, Davey Jr. Unnerstall.
Catherine’s presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the lives of all who knew her. Her warmth, generosity, and laughter will continue to echo through the memories shared by her family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to honor her at a Celebration of Life ceremony at Warrenton Faith Christian Family Church (FCFC), where Catherine and Carl were members. It was there that they met wonderful people who shared their faith and life with them, often gathering to play cards and engage in activities.
