Cecelia L. Peebles, age 78, passed away on February 2, 2026, with her loving family by her side and under the compassionate care of Hospice.
She was born on November 13, 1947, in Ellisburg, New York, the daughter of Arthur and Katherine Squires.
Cecelia was known for her witty personality, contagious smile, and the deep love she had for her family. She was a proud graduate of Belleville Union Academy, Class of 1966. Over the years, she enjoyed many simple pleasures—trips to the casino, playing bingo, and spending time canning, which brought her great joy.
In her earlier years, Cecelia worked at Fran’s Diner, where what began as a job turned into a lifelong friendship. Later in life, she lovingly cared for Fran, reflecting her generous and compassionate heart. In 1997, Cecelia began her career with Walmart, starting in the snack bar and later being promoted to customer service, where she remained until her retirement.
She was a member of Senior Center, Watertown where she made many great friendships to many.
Above all else, Cecelia cherished her family. She is survived by her son, James Peebles; her grandchildren, Jessica (Josh Miller) Toper, Rachelle Bull, Ryan (Erika) Barker, and Samantha Peebles; bonus grandchildren, Nicole and Tony Fant; and her great-grandchildren, John, Jax, Stephanie, Alissa, Kayden, Tyler, and Rachel. She is also survived by her sisters, Faith Bettinger and Marietta Squires; her beloved dog, Sohie; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her life partner, Bulah “Bubba” Gowan; her sisters, Gail Squires and Katherine Weaver; her daughter, Debbie Craine.
Calling hours will be held Friday, February 6, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m at Reed and Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State St., Watertown, NY. A benefit on Friday, February 20th, 6-8pm at the Adams VFW, burial and celebration of life in the spring at a date and time to be announced.
Cecelia’s laughter, kindness, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
