The Christian Benevolent Funeral Home announces with the deepest sympathy the transition of Mr. Charles Greene Jr.
Mr. Charles (Bookie) William Greene, Jr., a native Mobilian, born on August 7,1935 to the late Mr. Charles W. Greene Sr. and Mrs. Mary Louise Dunn Greene exchanged time for eternity on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. He is proceeded in death by his parents Charles and Louise Greene, his son Terance Jerrod Greene, sister Patricia (Pat) Taylor, brother Thomas Edward (Peter) Greene and Raymond LeBaron (Teedie) Greene.
He lived in the Historic Down the Bay Community most of his life and attended Council Elementary School, and Mobile County Training High School. He enlisted in the military where he served his country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps. Furthering his education, he attended Spaulding Business School.
With an honorable discharge in tow, he returned to Mobile, Alabama and on July 6,1957 married the love of his life, Vernetta Odom. To this union was born five children, Terance, Michele, Pam, Charlotte, and Dawn. He worked various jobs including Jiffy Poultry and over 25 years with Alabama Dry Dock and Ship Building. He was also co-owner and operator along with his father of Texaco Service Station on Broad Street.
While working at the shipyard by day he managed the Club Debonair by night. He learned the ins and outs of the night club life and had a knack for entertaining the crowd. From there, “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,” (his common phrase) he struck out on his own and established the infamous, PINK PANTHER LOUNGE, where his club motto was, “Ain’t nothing but a party”. Seven days a week he provided entertainment such as Blue Monday, Wicked Wednesday, Gong Show Thursday and Ladies Night. It was nothing to stop by on a Sunday night and find him with microphone in hand singing and tossing his pink cape after his performance. Guaranteeing that every night was indeed a party.
He was a faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. Church where he served dutifully on the Trustee Board and the Eloise Calloway Usher Board, where he could be depended upon to ensure the annual tea was successful in contributions and attendance. He will also be remembered by his Bethel family for spontaneously singing one of his favorite songs “Come on up to bright glory, I’ll be waiting up there.”
Charles “Bookie” Greene was a man for all generations. He touched many lives with his generous spirit, kind heart and his down to earth realness. He was someone who always spoke his mind. His contribution to his family, his church, his community and the city he loved, will never be forgotten.
