Charles Pate, Jr., 84, of Henderson, Kentucky, died peacefully January 6, 2024, at home.
Charlie served in the U.S. Air Force, worked professionally as a machinist, raised three children, warmly embodied the title “Pappy” bestowed by his adoring grandchildren, was blessed to fall in love again after the untimely death of his beloved wife, and will live on in the treasured memories of his family and friends.
Charlie was born April 30, 1939, and grew up with his parents and two brothers in Cloverport, Kentucky, where he excelled as an athlete who was particularly fond of baseball and basketball. He served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960. Stationed in New Mexico and Puerto Rico, Charlie achieved the rank of Airman Second Class and earned decorations including the Good Conduct Medal.
While on leave in South Carolina, Charlie met Sara Joanne Morrow. The couple wed November 1960 and began a 45-year marriage. With a jolly personality and gentle nature, Charlie was a quintessential “kid person” perfectly suited to his eventual role as “Pappy.” Charlie loved to laugh and was known to laugh even in his sleep.
Charlie was an ingenious handyman, woodworker, and professional machinist whose career in the tool-and-die industry included a two-decade stint at the Alcoa plant in Newburgh, Indiana. Charlie generously shared his gift with his family, custom crafting everything from a car seat that allowed his oldest grandchild to ride between him and Sara Joanne in his pickup truck, to cue sticks he played pool with alongside his son.
Charlie expressed appreciation in recent weeks for the kindness of the chaplain, caretakers, and other staff of St. Anthony’s Hospice, to whom his family extends special thanks.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles W. Pate and Bessie B. (Blake) Pate, and his wife, Sara Joanne Pate.
Charlie is survived by his partner, Carolyn Adams of Henderson, Kentucky; daughter, Joanne and Bob Welsh of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter, Terri and Carl Brooks of Evansville, Indiana; son, Bruce Pate and fiancé Leslie Reutter of Evansville, Indiana; brother, Chester Pate of Evansville, Indiana; brother, Jimmy and Rita Pate of Cloverport, Kentucky; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Hyland Baptist Church. The Reverend Kenny Kidd will officiate. Burial will be in Cloverport Cemetery in Cloverport, Kentucky.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be pallbearers.
