We have gathered here today to honor and celebrate the life of our brother, Claud Wesley Smith—known to many simply as “West.”Born on January 24, 1954, in Gulfport, Mississippi, West was the proud son of Mrs. Bessie Lee Smith and Mr. Claud Smith. He was raised in the heart of the Magnolia Grove community, where he spent his entire life—a steadfast presence and a true son of Gulfport.As a young man, West answered the call of duty and served his country in the United States Army. That sense of responsibility and quiet strength carried through every chapter of his life. After his military service, he worked faithfully for over twenty years at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. A hardworking man by nature, West also ventured into entrepreneurship, starting several businesses on the side—always striving, always building.West was a man of grit, loyalty, and principle. He was devoted to his family and deeply rooted in the values with which he was raised. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Ann Walker Smith; father, Claud Smith; mother, Bessie Lee Smith; grandson, Corey Dubose; two brothers, Willie Ray Smith and David Smith; and sister, Carol Ann Smith Rice.He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and resilience in those who knew him best. He is survived by his loving daughter, Claudia Dubose; stepsons, Kendall Walker and Corey Dubose; seven grandchildren, Janaya, Azaiirya, Edjuan, Cody, Ja’whuan, Caden and Xavion; three great grandchildren, Carli Dubose, Kayden Smith and Khia Smith; four brothers, Johnny Jefferson, Otis Smith, Cleveland Smith, and Claud Zell Smith; and two sisters, Ruth P. Payton and Emma N. Smith. West was also a proud grandfather, leaving behind a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry his memory forward.Though his earthly journey has come to an end, the impact of West’s life—his character, his laughter, and his unwavering presence—will live on in all of us.
